When I open Excel and Word a window opens titled: "Installing components for Microsoft XXX" (xxx = Excel or Word). Then an error message window opens that says: "Error 1320, The specified path is too long: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft."

From what I could find about this error it is supposed to occur if the path is over 150 characters... the above path is less than that. That is the only thing I can find about this error.

This is occuring on my laptop which also has a problem accessing the internet. In fact alot of problems are going on with this laptop which all started when I installed Norton AV. So this may be just a symptom of a bigger problem.

    I'm wide open for suggestions.

    Hi Jim,

I believe that error message refers to the entire original installation data path, not just the directory you reference. I had the same error occur in a corporate network environment where IT installed MS office at their location. I then took the PC to another location where I work. I attempted (unsuccessfully) to install additional components across the network and received the Error 1320 message. Like you, a repair did not work. However, I uninstalled Office completely and reinstalled from a CD and the error message went away. You might want to try the uninstall / reinstall method. Norton may also be a factor. If you are using the Office plug-in, you might want to consider disabling that feature.
