I have windows 98SE as the OS. I have installed audacity for sound editing etc. The problem occurs when I try to record audio. Playin the audio on Windows Media Player or Winamp, when I try to record on Audacity, the computer hangs and can only be restarted by using the crtl-alt-del from the keyboard or the reset button on the computer. This has started happening about 3 months ago. I have tried uninstalling and then re-installing audacity but the problem persists. Also, have tried other recording software but the same thing happens even then. Can someone tell me where I have goofed?

I had a similar problem burning audio CDs on my old 98SE system with Adaptec Easy CD Creator software. My solution (from someone on this board) was to use Ctl Alt Del and close out everything that was running except SysTray and Explore. Seems like other programs (especially screensaver) created interference with the CD burning process. Might not be your problem but it's worth a try.

Are you playing an MP3 in WinAmp or WinMP then trying to *record* it in Audacity? Try opening the file directly in Audacity, you can then record a copy to edit as you see fit.
Also as suggested by Virginia... close as many programs as you can that are running in the background. Win98 has limited resources and if you run low this could cause your computer to hang. HTH

    Thanks

Thank you both. I will try what you have suggested. The reason, though, I try to record the audio as produced by Windows Media Player or Winamp is because both these programs have sound enhancement plug-ins installed so that audio cd's burned and then played on the regular home stereo would sound near the original analog cd.
