I have several "security" apps that run "resident" (when i say several, i will disclaim that the overabundance is likely overkill, but i have not yet taken the time to determine what, if anythying, i can or should eliminate...).

In addition to a software firewall, i also have apps like spywareguard, antispyware, process guard, system safety monitor, avguard (antivir), and ewido security suite. I also use spyware blaster, but i do not believe that it runs resident, as it is imbedded in the registry process...?

Anyway. I was wondering if it is in anyway beneficial to up the priority of any or all of these critters and what the result might be. I use Process Explorer (instead of Task Manager) and with it, it is a simple matter to change the priority of any running app - yes i have tried it to some extent for the heck of it, and it would seem that upping the priority of all these apps to "above normal" priority, with only the firewall set to high priority, did result in other heavy duty apps (such as WMP) hiccupping to a halt at regular intervals. So, if this should be done at all, wondering which would be most crucial and how high to set the priority...

edit - if anyone should care to venture advice on which of the above noted security apps might be redundant that i could safely eliminate, i would appreciate it...

thats a lot of security. I dont know most of those apps, so ill pass on commenting on that.

The premise of your post is that you want to boost the priority of security apps. I do not understand why you want to do this. Is there a specific phenomenon you are trying to address by this action?

Process priority is automatically managed by the system. You should not modify things unless you have a good reason, as your manual intervention just makes the kernel work that bunch harder keeping everything balanced.

Well, it's not so much that I "want to" boost the priority, just wondering if it might be advisable to do so, to facilitate staying ahead of malware....

nah. let the system manage it. The way those spyware and security busters work, they are upstream from areas of sensitivity, or monitoring as an external entity. Giving them a higher priority would not help them work any better, they are already engineered to be as efficient as they can be.

Heres some reading on the subject to get you started http://www.microsoft.com/resources/...0/server/reskit/en-us/prork/pred_ana_umwv.asp
