I am trying to upgrade a computer with a new hard drive. Its a brand new Maxtor 60gig. For some reason the computer will go through the setup precedure of formatting, partitioning, and copying all the files needed to continue set up...but for some reason it will not finish the set up it completely goes through the initial stages and won't see the set up files already copied onto the hard drive....HELP!!!!!!

What is the exact error message and when exactly does it occur? What do you mean when you say it can't "see" the files already copied?

    Ananiah37 - Welcome to the Board :)

Not quite clear from your post if the computer is looping on setup or if setup simply stops and you have to start over. If the problem is looping see a possible fix from MS here - scroll down a few posts.

It does not give an error message. It says that the first part of the setup has completed successufully and then give the alert that the system will restart in 15 seconds. After the system restarts itself it starts the whole procedure all over again and does not go to the second phase of XP setup where you first see Windows logo with the blue progress bar at the bottom and then goes into the setup procedure to finish up by naming the computer, installing drivers, etc.

My problem dosen't seem to match what the article is talking about. I am not getting any errors. I tried what the article suggested and it still didn't work. Any more suggestions on what I should do?

I think it's time to start from scratch - check that your new hard drive is jumpered correctly, either Master or Cable Select, the latter if you have the 80 strand ribbon cable. I doubt you have a problem here as the drive is clearly being seen.

Now try a complete reinstall - boot from the CD. Windows may see the files and conclude that there is a previous installation on the disk - if this is the case follow the instructions given below (many of the quotes are taken from the blue installation screens) ....

Check in your BIOS that the boot order is set CD/Floppy/HD

Boot from the Windows CD "“ follow the on screen prompts "¦..

To set up Windows XP now press ENTER

    Accept the Licence Agreement F8

Searching for previous versions of Windows

To continue installing a fresh copy of Windows without repairing press ESC

Ensure that the drive/partition selected is the one on which XP was set up and press D to delete the selected partition.

To delete the partition press ENTER

To delete the partition press L "“ heed the warnings and DOUBLE CHECK before hitting L

To create a partition in the unpartitioned space press C

Accept max size and press ENTER

To set up Windows XP on the selected item (Partition (New Raw)) press ENTER
Format the partition using the NTFS file system "“ preferred unless you want an install of Win 98 to access data on the drive/partition, if so choose FAT.

    Set up is formatting "¦â€¦

When format is complete XP will install - hopefully!
