The other day I was uninstalling and reinstalling my DSL PCI modem to try something. Before uninstalling the modem it was marked as modem #4. After i was done reinstalling it was now shown as modem #5. Why is windows increasing the modem number? Can I reset it back to modem #1 perhaps?

Deleting the first four should do the trick.

**Edit. Deleting all five should do the trick.

Its the only modem in my computer so I don't understand why it will count up if I only uninstall and then reinstall. Maybe something in the registry?

Yes. It is something in the Registry.

According to the Registry there were 4 modems that existed therefore it went to #5.

MANY, MANY uninstall programs DO NOT completely remove things from the Registry. And as long as the Registry lists them Windows will go to the next number.

Many times it is necessary to MANUALLY clean the Reigistry before attempting to reinstall new hardware OR software

Maybe and maybe not. If the software is still on the HD the reg cleaners will not remove the entires. This can be a very tough job.

In some ( a LOT of ) cases the uninstall does not remove said folders. Especaily if it has been installed more than once.

Things like RegSeeker will only detect INVALID entries. If the software is on the HD the entries will not be invalid.

Now. A bit of Friendly advice.

I am not sure which version of Windows you are running.

So if 98. Once you get the reg cleaned up make sure you DELETE ALL entires of the RB00x.cab files in the C:\windows\sysbackup folder. Then restart Windows and it will make a new one.

If XP. Shutdown and Restart System Restore.

If you do not do this and Windows ( or you ) decide to use one of the backups you will be right back where you started. And in some cases worse off.

I have also run into cases where I removed something from the Device Manager only to have it out back because it was still in the Registry.

This can be a tough, time consuming job.
