    P4 - 1.7GH, 768MB RAM, (2) Hard drives: Primary 80GB, Secondary 40GB

I installed XP Pro as an upgrade over 2000 Pro, all went OK.

Here are a few of the problems:

    (1) The auto updates is finding updates that need to be installed. I am getting this update over and over again:
    {Security Update for Windows XP (KB835732) Successful Tuesday, February 15, 2005 Automatic Updates}
It gets downloaded and installed successfully every time but it is the only update that shows up. I have not seen SP1 or SP2 yet.
I am thinking until that one is recognized as installed I can not more on to the other updates. Is that true?

    (2) I have the USB Optical Intellimouse with the Wheel (which gave Win2000 problems) and XP is loading a regular mouse driver and I can not use the wheel. The Intellimouse driver is being loaded, atleast it looks like it is.

    (3) The system has slowed down a considerable amount.

    Any Ideas?
Hopefully I will hear back from someone when I get home from work.
    THANKS IN ADVANCE!
    John

*1. try rebooting, the update may require reboot it to fully complete.
    2. use Device manager to remove the mouse & reboot and xp will detect the "new hardware" and load correct drivers. (hopefully) Else use Device manager/mouse to update the drivers or choose from a list of supported drivers.
    3. xp defauly loads 32 Services at boot. Half are unneeded unless computer is on a domain. See this xp services guide to optimize computer:
    http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm

    * or go to Windows Update via the IE browser and download all at once if have a fast net connection.

If possible, a clean install of XP is recommended. Upgrades to XP from any previous OS create nothing but problems in my experience.

I don't believe I ever saw two lines and the rest of your post that disagree more.

My experience has been just the opposite. I am running XP Pro which upgraded 98SE which upgrade 98FE which upgrade 95 OSR2. NO PROBLEMS

But it does ( or may ) depend on why and or how the upgraded was done.

If the upgraded was done as an attempt to fix problems.

This says to me that there were existing problems
I am betting more than the Mouse

Not a good idea. Any problems will/may carry right over and may even be worse.

If the upgrade was done with a lot of stuff running in the background. That may not turn out too well either.

If Anti-Virus and/or Firewalls were active then there could be problems.

If XP was used to upgrade Windows ME, I hear/read that is not always successful.

XP over 2K ( no idea ) but I do hear/read that that does not always work.

If the upgraded was done from within Windows ( booting from the HD ) it may not be good. There may be too many files in use that do not get overwritten properly.

Sometimes if the Video is not set back to Standard VGA there can be problems. I have always set it back to VGA 16bit and then upgraded with the proper drivers for the new OS.

I have NEVER booted to the HD to do an upgrade or a reapir install. I may have ( did other than XP ) copy the setup files to the HD and run setup from them AFTER booting to the floppy.

Other than XP Pro I have yet just insert the CD and run Setup. Even then I let the machine boot to it.

Since you'll eventually need to get SP2, why not cut directly to it now? Then you won't have to sweat all the little updates since they're in SP2. All that will remain is about 10 that have been released since SP2. The one you are having trouble is contained in SP2 so that problem will likely disappear when SP2 is installed.

I really hope you are right.

I do not even like thinking it. And I could be wrong. But I have a strong feeling that this is a Wipeout/startover case.

I hear that BB. Sometime we get lucky and sometimes we don't when it comes to upgrades. We all prefer not to do it that way but it's supposed to work and will if done properly.

Download SP2 (WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe) from one of the links I posted and run it locally. Then all you will need is the subsequent HotFixes. I just checked my files and the HotFixes amount to :

    KB834707
    KB867282P
    KB873333
    KB873339
    KB885250
    KB885835
    KB885836
    KB886185
    KB887472
    KB887797
    KB888113
    KB888302
    KB890047
    KB890175
    KB891781
    Q282784

    That's more than I thought.

PS. It's good to keep a copy of the PS2 file around for future use. It may save you a lot of time downloading it again. Burn it to a CD or else order the CD that is available for free.

PPS. If you don't know that it's 272 megs and amounts to an extended download, you're fixin' to find out. If that's too much for your connection speed, it is available at some computer stores for free. I think Staples has it and possibly CompUSA.

    Hellmaster,

Check your system for any *scumware* (adware, spyware, viruses, etc) before installing SP2. Also a general cleanup of *junk* (browser cache, .tmp files, etc) and as surferdude2 says, "I'd do a defrag of the C: prior to this just for luck. " (can't hurt) :D

I'd recommend the normal procedure of killing unnecessary programs and disabling the AV protection.

Good luck, it normally takes about 30 ~ 40 mins to complete the install on a reasonably fast system.

Edit: Good point about the Spyware Mr. B.

That's good. Let it grow on you for a while. If no problems, dump the backup file it creates to free up the space.

I'm curious as to whether this fixed the functionality of the Updater site for you?? Do you now get presented with the HotFixes that are subsequent to SP2?

Incidentally, here's what I have elected to accept since SP2:

    My HotFixes since SP2

I set the auto updates to tell me when there are updates. the first time it popped up there were 14 updates. Which I installed and rebooted.

I just rean the windows update from the site and there are no priority updates just 3 optional software updates. Which I am going to go ahead with.
THANKS for your help! I will check out you SP2 info.
