I have two computers networked via a d-link router. I set everything up fine, they are both in the same workgroup, the sharing is turned on, permissions allowed, and firewalls turned off. But here is my problem.

    Computer one: K2G
Running: Windows XP Pro Corp SP2
Can access: Everything on computer two (Media) including the desktop.

    Computer two: Media
    Running: Windows XP Pro SP2
Can access: The C drive on K2G, but is denied acces to \\K2g\C\Documents and Settings\admin

I can however access the \\K2g\C\Documents and Settings\all users folder. I've tried sharing the admin folder with all permissions as well.. Still nothing.

    Now I'm lost

    Thanks,
    Kevin

That is how Wiindows XP works when using "Simple File Sharing" on a NTFS partition. It doesn't allow sharing folders within the Documents and Settings, Program Files, or Windows folders. You can disable these restrictions by disabling Simple File Sharing.

This behavior occurs because the default permissions that is converted to NTFS do not contain the Everyone group. The Everyone group is required for remote users who are using the Guest account to access the files. If you must have access to those folders, try adding the Everyone group and see if you still have the same problem.

I disabled simple file sharing, and the 'everyone' group was already set from best I understand, with all the permissions.

Still no luck. I dont understand why the one computer can access the others desktop and such, but not visa versa. The only thing I can think of is the different OS versions. But I didn't think that would matter much.

    Thanks,
    Kevin

All versions of Windows can be networked so no that doesn't matter. Do you get Denied Access to any shared folders on the network or just certain ones?

With XP Pro with simple file sharing disabled, check the Local Security Policies Expand Local Policies, then Security Options, and look at "Network access: Sharing and security model ", and ensure it's set to "Classic -local users authenticate as themselves ".

If you set the above Local Security Policy to "Guest only ", enable the Guest account, using Start - Run - "cmd" - type "net user guest /active:yes" in the command window. If "Classic ", setup and use a common non-Guest account on all computers. Whichever account is used, give it an identical, non-blank password on all computers.

On XP Pro, also check your Local Security Policy (Control Panel - Administrative Tools) - User Rights Assignment, on the XP Pro computer, and look at "Deny access to this computer from the network ". Make sure Guest is not in the list or any other users that you applied permissions to that may be preventing network access.

Well I tried messing with the security policies. Nothing.

I decided to go ahead and set up matching passwords as I've been meaning to anyways for remote desktop. Worked perfectly first try. I went into the winlogon and added some strings to auto logon when it boots so I dont have to deal with a password.

Thanks for your help, I wouldn't have thought to do that.

    Thanks,
    Kevin
