need help with config of drive

    Hi and thanks for you help...
    first, I have a gateway 450 II desktop w?w98.......a few weesk ago for some reason my two drives....dvd and cd stopped working properly..they open and shut and hum sometimes but thats it...wont run a disk......Ive ben emailing gateway forever and everything they tell me to do will not work and most of it is the same things over and over....what I think I need is to config them adn make sure the drivers are there.......Ive reinstalled the drives and all connections seem fine.....but in setup and in control neither drives show up...only the a drive for the 1.44............also......in bois they wanted me to change alot of the settings and when I tried.....they would not change and when I hit f8 or f9 they would all be back to where they were in the first place?..so upsetting...........is there anyone who can help me with this? thanks alot...........

    Unplug the gray ribbon cable from both drives and bootup.

    Shutdown and plug One drive back in and bootup to see if Window re-detects it..

    Need help with config of drives

    Thanks Steve.....

    my drives are....
    E:\ cd-rom drive panasonic dvd 6x
    D:\ MSI cd-r/rw cr 52-M atapi internal cd rewriter


    I did as you said and pu the tape first in the D and nothing showed up in "My Computer "
    then I redid it and put the tape in E and it did come up in "My Computer "
    when I opened it.....E:\ is not accessible...not ready
    then when I right clicked it....properties.......label was blank...type-cd-rom...file system-fat...........used space 0 free space 0 vol blank
    that was all the info it had......it does open and eject but thats it....at least it alive!
