I'm going to have to upgrade Win2000 to WinXP Pro. I've already got Outlook 2003 on it. We're planning on a clean install.

How do I save my contacts, personal folders, email rules, etc. for Outlook? Can I save them to a disc and then backup onto the new install?

    Thanks.

Yes, you can save it into a disc and restore it after you are done with the clean install.

    1. To backup your emails, personal folders and contacts:
    a) Launch Outlook.
    b) Click on File -> Import and Export. You will be presented a Import and Export Wizard.
    c) Select 'Export to a file' and click Next. Then, you will be asked to select file type
    d) Select 'Personal Folder File (.pst)' and click Next
    e) Select the folder you want to export. Normally, I would have selected the top most that says Personal Folders (or any other names that you might have renamed it). Also, ensure that 'Include subfolders' is checked.
    f) Click on Next and you will be prompted to select the location where you wish to save the *.pst file. For example, C:\Temp\yourfilename.pst

Note that there is an option right below where you specify the file location that allows you to replace duplicates, allow duplicates or never allow duplicates. I normally allow duplicates as a precaution.

    2. Backup email rules:
    a) Click on Tools -> Rules and Alerts
    b) In it, click on Options. An option dialog that will allow you to import/export the rules will be displayed.
    c) Click on Export Rules. Choose the desire location to store your exported rules (.rwz). This applies to importing the rules.

    3. Just in case you have customized signatures/stationeries, you may want to backup as well. They can be found at the following location:

    a) %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Signatures
    b) %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Stationery

Copy the 2 folders. You may restore to the same location after you are done with the clean install. Note that you can simply just enter the directory location as stated above by doing Start -> Run and enter the above lines.

    Hope this helps :)
