I recently installed a network card on a machine running windows 98 SE. By all appearances, the network card installed properly, except that windows hung when loading during the post-installation reboot. After I manually rebooted the PC, windows started up fine and the device manager listed the network card as installed and working properly.

The weird thing is that neither ipconfig or winipcfg are detecting the netwerk card at all. Needless to say something is wrong and I can't connect to my LAN

anyone have any ideas? I'm really in over my head on this one.

Win98 uses winipcfg, not ipconfig which is only for NT, 2000, 2003 and XP. Winipcfg only returns the settings for TCP/IP. Check in Network Neighbourhood > Properties to be sure that TCP/IP is installed.

true, Windows 98 SE uses winipcfg, but you can also run ipconfig out of a DOS command prompt. I know this to be true because I have done both on this machine. As for the TCP/IP settings, they are also installed and working properly (accoridng to windows, anyway), but both ipconfig and winipcfg are only detetecting my onboard modem TCP/IP, and don't seem to be registering the network card at all.

The ipconfig command is the command-line equivalent to the winipcfg command. The Ipconfig.exe utility is available in all versions of Windows including Windows 95.

Where are you getting your ip configuration from? Try adding a static one to the TCP/IP properties then see if it shows up in ipconfig. Maybe where ever you are getting DHCP from (if you are using it) is not working properly.

Interesting. I didn't know ipconfig was part of Win98. You are always learning new things.

I would try removing the protocol bindings for the NIC, delete the NIC and then Shutdown, not restart. After starting up, see if the system recognizes the card and wants to install it.
