Changing Windows XP License Key

Ok guys, if you need to delete this thread please do. I am trying not to intentionally break your posting rules.

Heres the scenario:

We have just taken on a new customer. We have found that they have illegal versions of Windows XP Professional installed on some of their machines due to them being hit by a cowboy computer person.

We have advised them that they need to purchase Windows XP professional licences for their software.

So heres the question:

Do you need to format and rebuild the computers to install the new licences on the machines?

A simple yes or no answer is all I am after.
