I connected this scanner to my home computer and when it scans it just scans a black image - nothing else.

I have tried to look up support help on HP Web site and I haven't found anything.

Has anyone else ever had this problem - do you have any idea what I should do?

I have Windows XP Pro - Update 2.

    Thanks.

Did the scanner work on another computer and if so does it still work on that computer? I'm thinking of a failure in transit - I hope you locked it before transporting it.

Have you checked that the scan head is lighting up and moving down the platten?

Yes, it was working on my office computer. The scanner is working as it is lighting up and showing as working but I just get a black copy of the scan. No, I didn't lock it as there is no lock to lock.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks.

If the scanner was working on your office computer and if that is running the same Operating System as your home computer I would try uninstalling and reinstalling the scanner software. If that fails to resolve the problem confirm that the scanner is still operational on your office computer. If not I fear a failure in the scanner.

I am not familiar with that particular scanner, but all that I have handled had a transport lock - generally a slide switch on the underside. If you have the manual check out this point.
