I got a new Dell (WinXP) a few months ago and have moved all the data files and programs from the old one. The old one was/is a locally built Win 98SE, 9GB HD, 350Mhz Processor, 256MB Memory.

I would like to give the old one to a friend who would like to have a basic computer (nothing fancy or speedy) but I would like to clean everything off and and reinstall the 98SE system and some of the old programs that would still be useful. I still have all the discs that came with the PC (Drivers, CDRW software, etc.)

I have never done anything like this before but would like to give it a try.I have searched this board and others but don't find anything that seems to put this whole process together. Could someone direct me to a site that might give me the instruction process I need to do this. Also, will I be able to get all the 98SE updates at this time. I do have the 98SE Security Update CD that was offered in February 2004. Thanks.

Breakout - Perfect. That's exactly what I was looking for. Now all I have to do is see how well I can follow instructions. Won't have access to the computer till after the weekend but I will post back to let you know of my anticipated success. Thanks.

Since the computer will live on after it passes from your hands - Before you start to reinstall Win98SE, you may also want to consider wiping the harddrive so your deleted files cannot be (easily) restored. A program I have used to clear computers at work before we give them away and to securely delete individual files on an ongoing basis is Eraser. It's free, has been around a long time and has gone through many releases.

    Download it here: http://www.heidi.ie/eraser/

There is a option for creating a bootable "Nuke Disc" that will wipe everything on the HD before you start over.

Thanks Breakout and WFC_Exile. I used your suggestions and all seems to have gone well. I used the Eraser program to get rid of the data that concerned me and the link you gave me at 98install was very easy to follow. I was a bit apprehensive when I clicked "Enter" at the point where it said "Format C" but everything seems to have worked fine. Windows 98SE seems to be operating OK and I have the CD burner working.

I have installed the free AVG and Zone Alarm programs but I have not been able to connect to the internet through my cable. My other two computers are connected (not networked) through a Belkin 4 port router (hard wire) and the computer I just did the installation on was connected to the same router a few months earlier. I went through the Internet Connection Wizard (IE) by selecting the option to connect manually. I chose ... Connect through a local area network (LAN) option and Automatic Discovery of proxy server. When I click on "Finish ", I get a message that indicates the setup was successful but when I try to open IE, I get a message "No connection to the ........... ". Could it be something in AVG or Zone Alarm that stops the connection? Perhaps this question should be in the IE Forum?

Again, thanks for all your help. The internet connection is not a big issue at the time but I would like to go ahead and update everything (Win98 after SE, ZA, AVG, etc).

" I have not been able to connect to the internet through my cable. "...

You could try this...go to Start>Run>type in...Winipcfg>OK>Select your NIC card (or whatever your cable is plugged into)>Renew...

It might work, it might not...but, it won't hurt nothin

I tried renewing the IP configuration but that didn't do the trick. I'm not sure the modem was installed or installed properly during the 98/98SE installation. I'll do some more troubleshooting on it later in the week. Thanks

I dropped the ball on this one. I uninstalled and reinstalled the NIC card and was able to make my internet connection and then get all the updates done. Thanks so much. This one can be closed.
