While I'm here I'll get some what if help. Let's say:
Buy new system__OS pre-installed___HDD is single partition 40G.
Defrag, Scandisk, as well as all other maintainence BS will take all day... What's a fella to do? Can I use FDISK and define 5 or 6 Logical Drives and still have an operating system and a system that operates? I remember the WARNING--All data on Disk x will be DESTROYED....message. Any takers on workarounds?
Come on people, let's get some innovative and exciting fixes to this (all too common ?) problem.

You'll have to buy a 3rd party software such as Partition Magic to do that. Fdisk cannot pull that off, you'll lose everything when you use it.

There are a couple of freeware utilities that do that also but you need to be pretty alert and knowledgeable to use them safely. Not for the faint of heart. One is Ranish Partition manager and another is PartitionResizer.

    Good luck.

The current version (ver.7) is retailing for $69.95 but I have seen deals all the way down to $45, can't remember where though.

I don't have it and have never seen any real value to multi-partitions unless you're running multi-boot or have a bios limitation problem.

Google search will usually turn up something if you're price shopping.

    Good luck.

edit, I found some deals here that go down as low as $35 for the latest version.

If you're going to do that I'd stick with Zepyhr's first recommendation - going with Partition Mgr. I've never used it myself but it's the premier 3rd party partioning software and you don't want to use some arcane freeware utility when dealing with your partitions.

Let me get this straight..... Those of you with these monstrous HDD (10Gig and above) don't normally multi-partition the thing? Every time you task your machine it must deal with that huge space? With so much space to choose from, don't your data get max-fragmented throughout the emence drive? After say a week of gamming, surfing, posting, and other everyday computing, how long does a defrag take? I've never had to use Logical drives and have always had only a single partition on my Hard drives. But my biggest HDD was 4.3G. I just assumed multi-partitions were the norm when dealing with the larger drives of today. Well, it's not like I've never been wrong before.

Maybe I'll combine a Windows Back-up program and some data burning software and copy the entire HDD onto CD and then use Fdisk, as I'm sorta cheap and don't wanna spend the cash on partitioning software.

Best price I've seen is at www.softwareandstuff.com
As to the defrag issue, SystemWorks SpeedDisk is a better defragger and you can run a full 40gig ATA 100 7200rpm drive in well under 15 minutes. If you are at 5% or less, you are looking at 2-5 minutes on a decent system. If you are running 98 or SE, you can install the ME defragger which is also quicker.

Maybe spend the money and really have something by buying ( or getting a friend ect. to get you the programs ) both Drive Image Pro AND Partition Magic. Both are made by Powerquest.
I still say Drive Image Pro is the best and most useful computer program made. Been using one version or another for about 4ish years to back up ALL of my harddrive. Easy to use and it is soooo nice to be able to restore everything in a matter of minutes. A very nice safety valve used in conjunction with Partition Magic. Should come standard with all new puters'.

With all other factors (CPU speed, HDD speed etc.) remaining the same - It normally doesn't take any longer to defrag 4.5GB on a 40GB partition than it takes to defrag the same amount on a 6GB partition.

And the data shouldn't get any more fragmented on the larger partition than it does on the smaller one.
