Installation Freezing

I'm tyring to re-install 98SE onto a P2 300mhz computer. I formatted the drive then restarted the computer with a start-up disc and the 98SE installion cd in place. As it goes through it's system checks I get a warning message:

Disk boot sector is to be modified
Type "Y" to accept, any key to abort
Award Software, INC.

I click "Y ". It continues to the next step. It does a Scandisk, the begins the 98SE Setup. A screen appears that is supposed to prepare everything for Windows 98 Setup Wizard. It goes through it's little process, gets to 100%, then everything freezes right there.


Any suggestions as to what may be going on?

Sounds like a disk problem. Suggest you start over and fdisk the drive: delete partition(s) and remake them (to overwrite and clean the mbr and boot sectors) and then reboot, format, and install. If still having problems do a low level format (write zeros to the whole drive), best using the utility from the disk manufacturer. If still having problems, you need a new hard disk. All this assumes you have checked the CD for problems.

The error message is from the BIOS and just means that the antivirus protection is turned on there. Can be turned off if it bothers you.

 

I know how to delete and remake the partitions, but I don't know how to make them overwrite and clean the mbr and boot sectors. Any help?

That above message is coming from your BIOS, and that is because you have the Virus Protection enabled. You need to disable it for the next reason.

You aren't seeing the message at this time, however windows setup is trying to write to the MBR, and is prevented by the virus protection, and is freezing up.
How to disable?
You see the message 'Press DEL to enter setup' press DEL at this time. It may be F8, or F4. Look under Advanced BIOS features.
