OneHitWonder - Welcome to the Board :)

Have you tried updating/reinstalling your video drivers?

What happens if you select 'No Screensaver'?

With respect and with no implied criticism of your good self your profile listing of 'Experienced' is a little ambitious? :)

    OK - here goes ....

Determine the make and model of your video card look in Device Manager > Display Adaptors. While you are there double click on your card and in the dialogue which opens hit the driver tab and note the version number. If you can't find it (unlikely) download and run Everest and look under Display > Windows Video.

Then go to the downloads section of the manufacturer's web site > graphics drivers, locate the driver for your board and download if newer.

Installation/updating differs between manufacturers - look for details in the download area.

Before you do that uninstall your video card through Device Manager - right click on card > uninstall and reboot the computer to let Windows find it again.

If reinstalling/updating your video drivers does not solve the problem run System File Checker ....

Start > Run > sfc /scannow - note the space and have your XP CD handy. SFC will run and exit without any closing dialogue. To see which files, if any, have been replaced look in Event Viewer.

You may care to do this before looking at the video driver.

    Screensaver

No offense taken .... and in my own defense, i already did look into the driver aspect ....nothing for me to do new there. Also, did the "scannow" - again, nothing ... im not sure what happened here. It was fine ... and like i said, the computer is only 6 months old ...
I was also told by a Dell tech that i should "Click Start?Control Panel?Add/ Remove programs ?Add/ Remove Window
    Components---Uncheck the Screen saver tab
    Click Apply---OK

    Restart the computer.

Again follow the same procedure as stated above, and check the screen
    saver option.
You will be prompted to install or load and will also be asked for the
path or source from where you want to install. Here you have to insert
    the OS CD.
I dont have a screensaver tab in my Add/Remove Window Components -- and i hate the thought of going to the OS CD ...

Well, so much for Dell :D - as you rightly say there is no Screensaver tab there - not in Pro at least.

    I'm guessing now ....

Control Panel > Power Options > turn off Hibernation?

What happened when you set 'No Screensaver' ?

Are you using one of the standard Windows screensavers which are part of XP?

Try setting another delay time before it comes on.

Absolutely no problem running without a screen saver - they do nothing to 'save' the screen :) They are a hangover from the days of DOS where a text image could burn into the screen and leave a shadow. With modern monitors and OS's they are 'entertainment?' for the user, not a lot more :D

Looks like your picture maker scr is corrupt - My Pictures Slideshow? under display Properties > Screensaver - either use another or redo it and save with a different name if that is possible. Can't go into detail as I do not use it.

OK - You're welcome, but if you do find the cause please post back and share it.
