Do Firefox and IE6.0 get along on the same machine?

I have a Win XP pro with SP2 machine. I have Norton Internet Security, adaware, spybot, spyware blaster, and it appears to all be working well.
I have heard about firefox from friends at work. Can I safely install it and give it a try without having to worry about reconfiguring my existing setup? That is, if I don't really see an appreciable speedup, can I just get rid of firefox and go back to IE? I read a few of the threads in this forum, and, even though I've been playing with computers for a good number of years(mostly hardware mods) I find a good number of the posts above my head. Maybe I'm just getting mentally lazy, but I would still like to give the possibility of a faster internet experience a shot. My connection is through Bellsouth DSL lite(256k throughput(?)). I really don't have much of a popup problem. But, I hate to think that I don't know what I'm missing.
I guess my main question is: can I install Firefox, try it, and if I don't like it, just ignore it and go back to IE? Or does the installation of Firefox take some resources from IE? I have plenty of space on my harddrive so I could just leave both intact. Thanks.

They are entirely seperate and have no effect on each other. I have both. IE for windows updates and Firefox for everything else.

Bill is completely correct, but don't expect that everything will fall in your lap. You will have to spend some time getting used to the location of the settings.
You should be ok. I have IE installed, and, don't even know why (I really do, but I don't even have to mess with the windos Updates.
You may decide to use Firefox for a while, and then stop using instead of uninstalling it. This is an excellent idea with all software.

    skaler2k,

If you use the Firefox 1.0 ZipFile, 6.3 MB, then all that's necessary is that you unzip the program into the Program Files folder.

If you want to keep it, great! If not, an uninstall isn't necessary. All you must do is delete the entire Firefox Folder.

I have a feeling you will be keeping that folder... ;)

    Firefox

Thanks for all of the feedback and support. I've installed Firefox 1.0. So far so good. I accessed this BB via both IE and Firefox. So far, the only difference is that the touchpad on this laptop(HP pavillon ze4805us) has lost it's ability to scroll. It has an area on the right side of the touchpad that, when you slide your finger up and down on it, the screen scrolls up and down. This ability is gone. When I go back to IE and access Windows BBS, it behaves normally. Also, I was previously logged in as a member. I had to, of course, log in for the first visit via Firefox, but, when I went back to access via IE, I had becme a guest again .I reentered my name and password and it let me post. We'll see if I lose the logon again. In the meantime, any hints on the touchpad problem. Its a neat feature I'd hate to lose. Also, Ramona, did you intend to make that reading material as hyperlinks? If not, where are the articles?
Thanks again for all the help.

    Firefox 1.0

    Thanks Ramona.
Any hope for the touchpad fix? I know it's a longshot. My main computer is a desktop with a "normal" wireless mouse. I'll install Firefox into it tomorrow. I don't expect that there will be any anomalies.
    Thanks again,
    Vic

    Vic,

In Tools | Options | Advanced | Browsing
Did you select smooth scrolling or autoscrolling?
Whichever one you selected, try the other option to see if it helps.

I've done a few Google searches, but don't see anything significant yet. I don't see anything in the Release Notes, or Known Issues...

Do a search on the HP site, as their Knowledge Base is fairly extensive. I've usually had a good experience troubleshooting a problem. There is also a live chat which is also great. There is rarely a long wait, and the Technician's I've spoken with seem to know what to do. HP does support Firefox, see this Article:

I've been using FF exclusively (except to Windows sites) for a couple of months and I like it.

BUT when you decide to try the associated app, Thunderbird, you may find a lot of things set up differently and not necessarily to your liking. I use TB and not OE. I think the problems I have are just a matter of not doing things right.
