Determining file format for files that are missing extensions

    Another possibility is to download and install Open Office. It's word processor is as or more powerful than MS Word and admittedly, MS uses Open Office in Redmond to open and salvage corrupted MS Office docs. 9read about that in an article somewhere a while ago)

    I've used open office to salvage excel files, word files and other docs.

    Cooool, I will give Open Office a try - I have it running on a Suse 9.1 and a Windows 2000 machine here. Never thought to try that for this project tho... thanks!
