Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird Timed Out...

    I have been trying to use Mozilla Thunderbird to check my emails, it asked me for an email address and I gave them my yahoo address. As a server I put mail.yahoo.com. But every time it tries to connect it says "connection to server mail.yahoo.com has timed out" . What does "time out" mean. And how can I change it? Also when I was browsing windowsbbs, I had a similar message about timing out. What's wrong?

    For thunderbird:
    Yahoo does not provide pop3 access by default.... it is a paid service.
    For Firefox:
    Some websites will time out. Simply refresh the page.

    does hotmail have pop3 access by default? What about IMAP, will this work in either? If not, is there any other free email servers that support pop3 or IMAP by default?
