    Your friend needs some EDU on the subject of spam and SPOOFING email.

    SPAM = UBE = Unauthorized Bulk Email.

    SPOOFING = altering the email headers to make it appear that the email message was sent by someone other than the person who really sent it, or altering to make it appear that the message originated from a different location.

    Many computers are infected with viruses that will send UBE by using the owners address book. The virus will send UBE to everyone in the address book and at the same time it will alter WHO the message comes from by putting another address in the FROM: line.

    So, if your friend's email address is stored in someones else's address book, and that someone else has such a virus, eventually your friend will receive a message that "appears to come from himself ". Or he will receive a return message from some mail server that states something like "message could not be sent ". (this is because some computer with a virus used HIS address as the FROM part and the message was sent to a nonexistant address and gets returned by the mail server to the FROM line in the email header.)

    Have friend do a virus scan to verify that his system is clean and then can stop worrying about it. And is desired, can use an anti-spam service or software. many isp's now provide anti-spam, have him check w/ his isp on how to activate the anti-spam.
