Has anyone had any experience with Diamond modems. I am wondering if they are as good as US Robotic modems. Is a controllerless modem acceptable on the faster machines of today?

    Chuck_W,
I have a old Diamond Modem 56k that has always performed well. Never had any kind of problem and it connects very good. It's a ISA modem and not a soft modem so I think there is a controller on it.

I put it away and now have cable :)
    Good Luck

I've only owned one Diamond modem so I don't know if what I say has any validity or not. The modem was probably the best modem I ever owned right out of the box. Connections were always good and downloads were better than with any other I had previously. If I was still on dialup, I wouldn't hesitate to buy another. Of course, maybe I was just lucky. :) But, I'd tried a bunch of them and this particular modem was the best by far. Can you tell I was happy with my Diamond modem? :D

Agree with the others re. Diamond. I had problems with USR on a mobo with a Via chipset and XP - incompatible :(

My Diamond gave no problems over several years - now in the cupboard as currently on ADSL.

I used to have one of the best modems EVER, the MWave!!! . I contacted IBM for drivers to fix my problems but I just got the run around, so I bought a Rockwell Modem. but now that computer gets the internet through my cable modem attached to my Pavilion.

Both good and bad experiences. Had a couple of ISA Diamonds that were as good as anything USR had out at the time except externals. Also have tried a couple of the Diamond PCI cheapo's and have nothing good to say about them. If you are still on dialup and want the best - get a good USR/3 Comm external.

    ;)

MWave!!!! What a nightmare. I've been working on a computer (yes, IBM)here with a MWave combination sound card and modem. I don't know about the modem as this guy has satellite internet but trying to find the right drivers for it (need the sound) has been everything but a pleasure. There's only about a gzillion different ones. :D I've pretty much given up on it. I told him it would be just as easy to buy a cheapy sound card and pitch the MWave. It's an older computer and only gets used for internet. No need for anything fancy.

I know this doesn't add any needed info to this thread but it sure gave me a good opportunity to vent my frustrations. :D

I just read Rockster2U's post. FWIW, mine was an ISA modem too. I haven't had any experience with their PCI cards. I should have thought of mentioning this before.
