Trouble w/ laptop video and Win 98

I have a Gatewaway Solo 2200 laptop running Win 98. I changed the display settings from 600X480 to 800X600 and after restrting the computer, i can hear the windows startup sound but then all i get is a blank screen (i even hooked up an external monitor with the same results). I can see the display on startup when it runs the bios and memory check. I need help, or I may have to put in a new HD and OS. Thanks

 

NO Display

Try starting the laptop in safe mode. Then right click on the desktop anywhere there isn't an icon. Select the bottom most selection(properties). Go to settings(rightmost tab) and set the display back to 640x480. Reboot.Pray.
