Over the last several days I've encountered problems when trying to open/view attachments containing .pps and various video files (e.g. .mpeg; .mpe;.asf etc.). I get the popup consoles stating that I need to create associations via Folder Options for the various files/formats. My system is already/presently configured for these associations and I had never had a problem in the past opening these various file types!

And when I do navigate to My Computer/Tools/Folder Options/Files and then begin to scroll down to PPS/PPT the entire window disappears!! On several occasions Dr. Watson Postmortem and the Windows Error Reporting consoles spring up!!

As a test I decided to save the various types of attached files from several different OE messages to a newly created Desktop folder and then attempted to open them; each and every one opened and/or played with absolutely no problems!!! I should also note that I uninstalled/deleted PowerPoint 2003 via Add/Remove and then reinstalled it to see if it may have been corrupted but to no avail - I still couldn't open/play the various files etc. as I had been able to up until about 48 hours ago!!

Can anyone offer some advice/solution to this weird situation?

Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

Which OS are you using? A repair of IE/OE is worth a try....

Win 98 > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > MS Internet Explorer > Remove and select the Repair option in the dialogue box.

Win XP > Start > Run > sfc /scannow - note the space and have the XP CD handy. SFC will run and exit without any closing dialogue. To see which files, if any, have been replaced look in Event Viewer.

Thanks for your response and suggestions. My apologies, I should have included that I am running Windows XP Home Edition with SP2 installed.

I had/have run SFC (sfc /scannow) and about half-way through the process a popup console came up requesting that I insert the Windows XP Home Edition SP2 CD which I do not have/possess! I do have the Microsoft SP2 CD (free edition) and inserted it but it was the incorrect one according to SFC!!

I will attempt another SFC scan and see if it helps but I am still very concerned that I cannot access My Computer (/Windows Explorer)/Tools/Folder Options/Files without the screen 'disappearing' and Dr. Watson Postmortem/Windows Error Reporting etc. popping up!!

Do you knowledgeable users out there think that I may have to uninstall and reinstall the OE6 application?

Any additional input/help/advice will again be greatly appreciated!

Here is a workaround for SFC ....

    http://www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html

You need to point SFC to the i386 folder as detailed in that URL.

SFC /scannow is the first stage in repairing IE/OE .....

Another solution would be to reload SP 2 from your CD - worth a try. Alternatively uninstall SP 2 via Add/Remove Programs and reinstall.
