When running a tool like RegScrubXP or Registry Mechanic, is it generally safe to let it make all of the choices for you as far as what to remove ?

If not, can I rely on their backup and restore functions to put everything back the way it was, should I have a problem after removing entries ?

    thanks

sir gerald--What problem are you trying to solve by using these Registry clean up programs? What versions of Windows and IE are you using?

    Jim ...

It's an older system with Windows98 that I'm trying to clean up before giving it away.

I uninstalled some programs but entries were left in the registry and now, whenever the system boots, it complains about it.
I didn't think I'd be able to identify them for manual removal so I ran Registry Mechanic.

    It found 137 items.

Suggest you run RegSeeker (freeware). A description of each redundant entry is given, delete those in green and ensure that the backup box is checked. If you do have a problem you can restore the changes. See the screen shots on their site and do not be concerned that it is labelled Beta - it's been that way for a very long time!

AFAIK RegScrubXP is no longer supported.

RegSeeker does a good job. I have yet to have it make a bad choice ( unlike myself ).

    It does make backups.

I have used it on 98, 98SE and XP Pro with ( as yet ) no problems.

After you finish all your registry cleaning, I also suggest a boot to DOS (not the command window but boot into DOS) and then

scanreg /fix and after it finishes
    scanreg /opt

This is a DOS command specific to Win 98 and the like which were based on DOS.

There is no DOS as such in XP, but a DOS emulator ....

Start > Run > cmd will take you to a C: prompt.

Thanks Pete, I went there but the scanreg commands were not recognised.

"scanreg is not recognised as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file "

roy66--PeteC is right about how to emulate DOS in WinXP. However, specific to scanreg, that file (scanreg.exe or scanregw.exe) does not come with XP so you won't be able to run it.

    regseeker 1.35

I was just scanning the Forms and noticed your opinion on regseeker. I thought that I would like to install it. Should it show up with a shortcut icon (something like spybot?) if it should then I must be doing something wrong because try as I might the download and install just won't happen.I am running XP and everything looks good but after I assume all is well. Regseeker does not seem to be there? I usually save the download into my documents and right click to check for viruses then right click to open. now it says extract info but when done it will not install( I think) anyway it is not there? I hope that I am not just being stupid, anyone have any ideas. Thanks

Loony, RegSeeker is a stand alone program and as such does not require you to install it. Just download and extract it and open the folder it creates, and run the executable (regseeker.exe).

You can move the folder to anywhere you like. You can also create your own Desktop shortcut to the executable to run the program. You may even prefer to drag the shortcut onto your Start > All Programs and drop it there in an area that you like.

In 98-98SE there should be a selection for MS DOS Prompt under Start-Programs.

In 98-98SE if C:\Windows;C:\Windows\Command is not in the path line of the Autoexec.bat then at the DOS PROMPT OR the Start-RUN line you will need to type

    C:\Windows\Command\Scanreg.

I just checked on a 98SE machine to be sure. At the Start-Run line I can just type SCANREG and it runs. In fact I use both commands and they worked.

Also. If you do use RegSeeker in 98. Or in fact before you do ANY reg cleaning.

It is a good idea to make sure that you have a recent RB00x.cab file in the C:\Windows\Sysbckup folder BEFORE you use RegSeeker.

And also it would be a good idea to know how to do a Scanreg /Restore.

Well ... RegSeeker and the 2 DOS commands found and fixed quite a few problems, but I'm still getting the message ... not gonna worry about it though.
Everything's working ok so I'm not gonna push my luck.

    Thanks for the input ...

    Pete ...

The program that was uninstalled is called SSKEY.
It's an activation key for UNIX systems.

Here's the msg that comes up when booting.

Cannot find a device file that may be needed to run Windows or a Windows application.

The Windows registry or SYSTEM.INI file refers to this device file, but the device file no longer exists.

If you deleted this file on purpose, try uninstalling the associated application using it's uninstall or setup program.

If you are really keen on removing that message it would be worth opening up System.ini in Notepad - make a backup first - and 'remming' out any line referring to SSKEY. RegSeeker should have found it in the Registry if it was there.

Place the cursor at the start of the line and type in rem - save and exit.

    Reboot.
