I did one minor tweak in my registry concerning windows messinger, and am not sure if this has anything to do with these problems, or not.

    1. This just started today, I clicked on a notepad document, and I cannot get it to resize properly.
It will resize everyway, but from the bottom. The bottom of the document goes
below the task bar, and I cannot drag it up. This only happens in notepad.
It does not happen in Explorer, Wordpad, or my browser windows.

    2. This morning when I turned on my computer, after it booted up, showed the desktop as usuall, then my "C/ Windows" folder opened up. I restarted, and it did the same thing.

I would appreciate some help with these 2 problems.

astroz - Welcome to the Board :)

    Re Notepad ....

Are you able to drag the title bar up the screen or is it already at the top?

    Try this .....

Start > Programs > Accessories > Notepad - right click on it > Properties - Open in Normal Window.

    Hi PeteC,

I did as you suggested, and no change. The "properties" were all in order, set to open in "normal window ".

I can drag and resize the window from the top, left, and right, just not from the bottom. It's like the bottom of the window sank to a "bottomless pit" so to speak.

astroz---System Restore? If you agree, you may have to consider whether to redo that Registry "tweak ".

    Hi Welshjim,

I did "undo" the registry tweak, and also tried systmem restore. It would not let me restore back to the 2 available date options that I had.

I have used system restore on an unrelated issue, and it worked, but not this time.

Notepad.exe is a Critical System file - strange, but true!

Suggest you run System File Checker .....

Start > Run > sfc /scannow - note the space and have your XP CD handy.

SFC will run and exit without any closing dialogue. To see which files, if any, have been replaced look in Event Viewer.

    FYI - Notepad Replacements

    Hi PeteC,

I have been enlightened, indeed on Notepad.exe being a critical system file.

I have also ran sfc /scannow , I was not prompted for the XP CD.

I do not have a XP CD, my systyem only came with 2 restore disks. What would I do in case I did need the XP CD, since I only have the 2 restore disks?

Thanks for the Notepad repacement link.

    Did that solve the problem?

You were not prompted for the XP CD because SFC was directed to the i386 folder on your hard drive. With this info in the Registry the XP CD is not required - more info here

Your Recovery CD's contain a mirror of the software loaded to your m/c on delivery. If you run the Recovery CD's be aware that your hard drive will be formatted - this loses all your data so back up regularly and not to your hard drive!. Your computer will be 'recovered' to the state it was when delivered. Any programs you loaded would need to be reinstalled.

If you ever need a full XP CD, say to make a repair install and so on, you are basically scuppered. Very few purchased PC's come with a full install CD these days - more's the pity.

My notepad problem is not solved, but I suppose I can do a work around with another notepad type app available.

My 2nd problem is solved. upon further investigation, I discovered and app in my "C:\WINDOWS" folder called: "gIFTopen.exe ". Through misconfig in the "start up" window, I found a
function checked, named "WINDOWSgIFTopen ". I learned from another source, that I might have gotten this form a file sharing program that I had downloaded.

The file itself checks out clean, as far as viruses or spyware.

Thanks PeteC for your help concerning the XP CD, and for the link for sfc /scannow.

    Notepad problem solved....

I just opened Notepad up, and took the cursor and made it narrow, appx. 1" in width. I then "stretched" it from side to side just a few times. I then began dragging it up, from the top, and the bottom of Notepad came up above the task bar. Not sure why this worked, but it's all back to normal.

I believe I figured out how this happend. 1. I had Notepad open (not full screen) 2. I had the registry open (not full screen, and "on top" of the Notepad window) When I made the edit in my registry and then closed the registry window is when the bottom of Notepad "stretched" below the taskbar.

From now on whenever I am working with the registry, I will not repeat the same steps mentioned above.

I have discovered EditPad Lite, which has more funtionallity than Notepad, and I perfer it over Notepad.

Thanks PeteC for your Notepad Replacement suggestion.

I did mention dragging the title bar up the screen in my first response, but omitted to suggest that you first resized - as opposed to drag - the window first.

Anyway - glad to hear you resolved the problem - thanks for posting back.

    Astroz ...

Here's a little trick that has gotten me out of similar situations in the past, where the top of a window was at the top of the screen and couldn't be dragged any higher, but the bottom was hidden behind the taskbar.

If your graphics card/monitor combination allows you to select a screen resolution greater than the one you normally use (1152x864, rather than your usual 1024x768, for instance), make that selection. The bottom of the problem window should now be visible, and you can make the window shorter.

Reset your screen res to its normal setting and adjust the height of your problem window as desired. Press the Ctrl key when you close the window ... it should reopen the same size, in the same location, next time.
