My sister-in law bought and installed Quickbooks (basic) 2005. Before she bought Quickbooks, their sales people assured her she would have no problems accessing her old files make with Quickbooks version 5.0 quite old. But as she said (what do I know and they should know) Well she can't ! and it is Tax Time and needs to issue tax employment slips, soon! Is there anyone out there that might know what to do? She has a windows 98 system.

This is what was on the site:

Converting data from a previous version
    KB ID#: 117506
Products Affected: QuickBooks 2005 All Versions
    Categories: Install/Convert

Question: How do I convert data from a previous version of QuickBooks for Windows?

Answer: Conversion is only required if a newer version of QuickBooks is installed over an earlier version. If you have not updated your QuickBooks product, it is not necessary to step through the conversion process. To restore a backup to an existing version of QuickBooks installed on a different computer, first update QuickBooks, and then follow the normal restore steps.

The time required to convert a company data file largely depends upon the capabilities of your computer, and the size of the file. If your company data file is large, you may want to start the conversion at a time when your computer is not needed for other tasks.

Note: QuickBooks Basic will not convert data created with features found only in non-Basic versions of QuickBooks (for example, estimates).

To convert a QuickBooks company data file:

Open the newer version of QuickBooks, and open your company file:
If you see a Welcome to QuickBooks window, select Open an existing QuickBooks company, and then click OK.
If one of the sample files opens, choose Open Company from the File menu.
If you see a No Company Open window, click the Open an existing company button at the bottom of the window.
Note: If you are restoring a backup to a new computer, begin the restore normally. Skip to step 3 and proceed with the rest of the conversion steps provided.

Find the existing data file in the Open a Company window and click Open. (You may need to navigate through the Look In drop-down list to find your file.) The file name should look something like: [Company Name].QBW.

Note: If you installed the newer version of QuickBooks over the earlier version, the company data file may try to open automatically. In this case, you will see the window noted in step 3, and will not need to open the company data file separately.

An Update File to New Version window will open, containing a message that begins: Your data file needs to be updated to work with this version of QuickBooks... Please read the entire message carefully before typing yes in the space provided.
Click OK twice to begin the backup process.
Verify the Filename and Location in the bottom half of the window, and then click Back Up.
You may receive one or more messages. Read each one carefully before clicking Yes.
(For QuickPay users) If QuickBooks asks whether you want to convert your QuickPay data, select No.
QuickBooks still converts your paychecks and account balances, but QuickPay does not work with this version of QuickBooks.
If you are a QuickPay user, you will need to print your payroll information and set up payroll in QuickBooks. See your User’s Guide under For QuickPay users and Setting up payroll.
When QuickBooks has finished converting the data, the hourglass will disappear and the name of the data file will display in the upper left corner of your screen.

    LOL
I have a little experience with Quickbooks (Having to do virtually the same thing at my mom's home office when they moved and updated to a newer version.) I knew it could be done just couldn't remember how. Quickbooks has pretty good documentation and help topics on their site.
