I am trying out Thunderbird as my default mail client right now,and like it so far, it seems pretty well stable but I have one question. When I receive images from family\friends, they show up with the correct icon association in the long attachemnt box at the bottom of the mail window, but when I try to save anything, it saves it,(depending of the type of image it is)as a gif, jpeg, jpg, bmp etc. etc. with a save as *All Files* in that box. Everything that comes in as an attachment is saved as *ALL FILES* and to me that is not good. :-( There seems to be NO option to save any image as anything else that I can see or find. The problem with this is that they do not show up correctly when I look at them again, in their saved folder location, and to view them I have to go to the properties of each image and then add the correct image extension (gif, jpg, jpeg, bmp, etc) to each graphic image. My file assocations are correct in my OS so that could not be the problem. So far, this is the only problem I don't like in Thunderbird, so am wondering if someone could tell me whether this is a bug in Thunderbird mail or if I am not doing something right or even maybe I need to add some extension that might correct this. Any help would be appreciated. TIA.

Not sure what you see, but, in my case, I see the file name in toolbar, or what ever you may call, at the bottom of the message. I, rarely, open attachments, but I happen to have one e-mail from my niece, with three .jpg and one .bmp attachment. If I right click on the name, I see two choices. One is Save as, and the other other below as Save all. If I click on the Save as, I get the same name as the .jpg file in my e-mail, and, by default I save on the Desktop, to be moved at a later date to a less convenient storage spot. I can open the file, and only that file. This is the same as in Netscape7.2 or Mozilla1.7.5, except that they have the names in a box on the upper right.
Whaever problem you have has nothing to do with Thunderbird.

    Vanilla ...

Your post is confusing, because it sounds as though you're saying that an image attachment IS saved with the proper extension, but then you turn around and say that it's saved as *ALL FILES*, which makes no sense.

When I right-click on an attachment, I have three choices: Open, Save As..., and Save All.... Open doesn't work, but it doesn't matter, because the attached image is displayed inline in the message. If I choose Save As... the dialog box does show All Files in the Save as type: window, but the type is already specified by the file extension in the File name: window immediately above. Then, I can view the image correctly from its saved location.

You didn't state which Thunderbird version or build you're using, but I tend to agree with Westside ... your problem doesn't lie with Tbird.

    Vanilla,

If you don't have a program associated with the File Types, then that could be your problem. When I save a gif or jpg image, and select "Save Image As" the "Save As Type" field shows the program I have associated with those File Types. In this case it shows: IrfanView GIF file.

When you open a graphic file on your HD (gif, jpg, bmp, etc.,) what program opens those files?

Sheesh , Re-reading my post confused me too, so sorry to you two guys for the confusion. it was late when I posted, I was tired, and I was just rambling on I guess.

Thanks Ramona for your input. I fixed it by associating those files with ACDSee. It's all cool now.

I like Thunderbird mail, It seems to work well, but I still think I like the ol' Netscape mail better. Or either I am a die hard Netscape fan. I might just use the Firefox browser and use Netscape as my mail client.

    Thanks again.
