After deleting what he thought was spyware most of the desktop icons on my father's computer were removed. On the next startup xp booted up as normal but at the user log on page the following message is displayed:

A problem is preventing windows from accurately checking the license for this computer error code 0x8009001a.

Although we can access windows through safe mode there is little we can do because he can't remember the administrator's password

thanks in ancticipation of your help

I found this so you may consider trying it:

    Go to start/run, and type
    regsvr32.exe regwizc.dll
    Click OK, then type,
    regsvr32.exe licdll.dll
    and click OK

    Good luck.
