I have recently had broadband installed and i am having the following problem:

I have set up my internet account using a direct connection from modem to laptop which was fine.

however when i connected my modem to my router i get a 'page cannot be displayed' message on explorer.

The connection from router to laptop is fine, and i know the modem is working properly because of the direct connection.

    i am using the following:

Motorola SB5100 Surfboard modem and Linksys Router

    any ideas?

    regards

    I'm kind of lost.

You should be going from the modem to the router to the laptop. Did you run the software that came with your router and setup auto DNS?

thats right, modem-router-laptop thats what i've done, auto DNS? sorry that doesn't mean anything to me.

I have ran the software that came with both modem + router.

the funny thing is that i actually had it working for about a minute when i first set it up but from then on, nothing.

    Thanks for the reply

I think what you will need to do is enable MAC Address cloning on your linksys router. A lot of ISP's register your MAC Address from your computer so that only that pc can connect. I don't know what operating system you are using but if it is XP start a command prompt and type "ipconfig /all ". Then look for "Physical Address ". It will be in the form of xx-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx. Then connect to your router and login. I think it is MAC Address cloning is on one of the advanced tabs. Once you find it, just enter the MAC Address of your pc in the field. That should take care of it.

After you hook up your computer to the router, and the router to the modem, power cycle the modem (pull the power cord, let sit for a few seconds, then plug back in)...then power cycle the router...see if that has any effect.
