    Hi All,

A very strange problem but then again what else is new????

I have three desktop computers - 2 are running Windows XP Pro and one is Windows XP Home. They were all networked together and ran perfectly for one week.

All of a sudden the Windows XP Home one can see and access files on the other two (Pro versions) but we (Pro versions) cannot access his. We get an error saying "the user (Home version) has not been granted the requested logon type at this machine ".

I have no idea what this means as I am administrator on all of the machines. I have already done the Network Wizard numerous times, logged off and logged on, disconnected routier, disabled firewall settings and nothing works.

I also noticed that Home doesn't seem to have a security policy folder so that I can check that.

Any experts there have any idea what is happening and why it was working and out of the blue it's now not working.

    Thanks.

This specific problem has been documented and the workground to fix this is kinda involved but I hope you would follow these instructions carefully and report back to let us know if your problem has been fixed.

With Windows XP Pro, you usually fix this problem using the Group Policy but since you are running XP Home, you'll need to use the Windows 2003 Server Resource kit to fix it. For Windows XP Home, use the ntrights.exe utility to make the change.

Type these lines at the command prompt to grant network logon rights to the Guest account. The second and third commands are case-sensitive, so type them exactly as shown. Note the "+r" in the second one and the "-r" in the third one:

    net user guest /active:yes
    ntrights +r SeNetworkLogonRight -u Guest
    ntrights -r SeDenyNetworkLogonRight -u Guest

Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit Tools

Should I just download the Windows Server 2003 tools and see what happens first? Or should I type the commands as you have indicated. As you can tell I'm a novice so don't want to mess around with something that I have no idea what I'm doing unless it's something simple.

And why was it working before and then all of a sudden not - is this a setting that can just change out of the blue?? It is my son's computer and he claims he didn't do anything to it but I now have serious doubts.

Before you download the Windows 2003 Resource kit, go to the XP Home machine, open the Command Prompt, and type the following line and press ENTER.

    net user guest /active:yes

Then try accessing the XP Home computer and see if that fixes it. If it doesn't then install the Windows 2003 Resource kit. Once the installation completes, then click Start, point to All Programs, and Windows Resource Kit Tools | Command Shell and enter the commands above in my previous post.

Be sure to let us know steps you have taken so that we can document and further provide better assistance to others.

Well the typing at the command prompt (1st step) did not fix the problem so I am now downloading the Windows 2003 Resource Kit.

    Stay tuned for backup!!

Followed all the instructions and did not work.

When I typed the third command (ntrights -r SetDenyNetworkLogonRight -u Guest I got a message:- Revoking SetDenyNetworkLogonRight from Guest ... failed. AddUserRightToAccount. Error - AddUserRightToAccount - 1073741728.

Does this make sense to you or do you know what I'm supposed to do next???

    Thanks.

That's odd. I haven't seen that error before. Try accessing the computer again and see if you still have the same problem. If that doesn't work, then try running the Network Setup Wizard. After you run the wizard, then try the computer a second time. Make sure there is no firewall turned on while troubleshooting.

    ecross,

I know that as of last night I still could not access the computer so I will give it another try again this evening with those commands and disabling the firewall completely and see what happens.

    I'll keep you posted. Thanks.

I know why you got that error now Anne.

It's SeDeny... and you typed "SetDeny..."

    Do you see the difference?

Sorry I didn't responsed sooner but I have given up with this problem. Nothing seems to work.

I have no idea why all of this is not working but I do as you have suggested and then when I go to my computer to try and access the other computer's files - I can't see that computer at all in my network places.

When I go into see network group - I see the computer icon but it says the same message I had the beginning - the logon error and not having access to this computer.

    ?????????????????????

Anne- did you read Eric's last post?

Funny thing about these things called computers - they don't know how to spell - you have to do that for them and you have to be very exact. As has been said, "Computers don't make errors, what they do, they do on purpose! "
    ;)
