    My Win98 desktop sys has
    > Floppy (A)
    > HD (C)
    > DVD (D)
    > CD R/W (E)
I'm adding a new/slave HD and want to know if there is anyway I can get it to
    be drive F ?
I understand that Fdisk will default it to D and the other will (hopefully) get renamed

Order in Which MS-DOS and Windows Assign Drive Letters
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;51978

"Microsoft MS-DOS assigns drive letters to the first two physical floppy disk drives and hard disk drives it finds at boot time in a fixed sequence, including multiple partitions and logical drives on the hard disks. You cannot change this sequence. "

But you could always go to administrative tools and change the drive lettering from there if you need to.

    Dave932932,

In XP, yes; not in 98!

mudclub, I would only worry if you had more than one drive partition on your HDD. Windows will automatically reassign the references to your optical drives.

If your HDD had another drive (you had partitioned it into two, three or more drives) then programs that you had installed onto other partitions may have references to their original location. If everything was installed on the C: drive, you should have no problems.

Any particular reason why you may be worried about the drive allocation? I don't see it being a problem in your case.

    Matt
