Ok, My computer has Windows Xp, and my friend had a computer with xp, but it was messed up, so he borrowed a disk from my school and got Windows 2000 Professional installed onto it. I have a dsl modem running to a hub, and two cables running off it into both computers. I can't seem to get it to work. I plugged the internet into my friends computer and it stills says no internet connection. I dont know how to fix that. But I tried running the Networking Wizard and made a disk, put it into the computer with 2000 and says connect run. It can only run with 95, 98, ME, and XP. Hmm.... I mean, can someone help me out here on what the heck is wrong. No internet connection to the other computer and how to share files/internet/etc. Thanks a bunch if you can help.

The Network Setup Wizard doesn't support Windows 2000. You must configure those options manually. Did you try enabling ICS on the host computer?

This explains detailed information how on to setup Internet Connection Sharing. You only need to enable ICS on one computer. This is the computer that is going to act as the ICS Server. For more details, please see the following link.

What do you mean that your computer is wrong or missing stuff? We can absolutely try to get this stuff working but without more details it is hard to say. You'll need to explain the steps that you take. You can't get it to work doesn't help us much to what the problem is. With a broadband connection, you may want to consider purchasing a router in the future. It makes it easier and there is no need to enable ICS.

Well I contacted a person from a internet company, well the thing is, i am going to use the same ip address for both computers, but through the ports its saying that I am having a conflict with another ip address on the network. The man told me somehow i have to make it that its seperate so i can use both ip addresses without the conflict thingy. Can you help me out here, or should i just buy a router??

    Thanks

Each ip address on the network must be unique. The two computers shouldn't have the same ip address. If two computers had the same ip address on the network, it would have a conflict and it wouldn't get routable properly to one of the computers on the local area network.

A router will make things easier for you and will assign a private ip address usually in the 192.168.x.x ip range to each of the computers.

Ok, i bought a router. a Belkin 4 port router. Connected cables etc. Doesnt work. I talked to some lady, hardly spoke english and she said my dsl modem (Westell model # b90-611010-06) has a build in router and needs to be bridged. I contacted my internet supplyer. They told me to go to 192.168.1.1 to config router. I have been there before, but somehow it wont open on my computer. Either that or its wrong. So do you know where i can config my router so i can bridge, or what am i doing wrong. Thanks for you help.

Have you tried using the belkin router? Connect the ADSL modem to the WAN/Internet port on the router. Try connecting that router to the Adsl modem. I don't think a Bridge is what you need. Looking at Westell.com, it appears that the model is just a router not a DSL modem. Have a look here.

FYI, check with your manufacturer for details for the model you have. Most routers you should be able to access from any computer by simply typing the ip address in the address section of the browser.

Well the Westell Modem has only 1 ethernet port on the back. Right now i have the Westell hooked into the Internet/Wan Port on the Belkin router. Then i have 2 straight thru cables running from 2 ports into both computers. Nothing works. I put the Belkin install disc in and got all the way up to the last step, the internet connection one. So i called belkin, and the lady said is there a blinking connected light, and i was like yes, and she said i need to bridge that westell router, or would i have to bridge the belkin???? I tried typing in all the addresses to get to router config ie 192.168.0.1. It tells me server not found. I dont know whats even going on

You should be able to connect two routers together with no problem. You'll need to configure the 2nd router so all of the settings will be referred to the Westell. Connect any computer to the LAN port, then access the Belkin router and then disable the DHCP Server. That should work.

Take a straight-through network Ethernet patch cable and connect it to a free numbered port of the first router and plug the other end into the uplink port (or into a another number port).
