I have hundreds of JPG's, GIF's and TIF's that I can't seem to open anymore.
    Inconsistancy:
Some photos will open and others will not.
    Errors:
Windows picture and fax viewer says "no preview available "
Infranview says "can't read file header ! "...... "unknown file format ! "
Micrografx says "this file type is not supported on open "
    History:
The photos came from my old rig, windows 95. They were originally edited and saved with micrografx picture publisher 6, and they all worked.
Moved the photos to my new rig, windows xp, now some don't work.

Is there a program that will fix these?
Or some method to manually edit the headers?

    "Paint cannot read this file.
This is not a valid bitmap file, or its format is not currently supported "

    Welderjeffo,
What happens when you right click on a picture (one that wont open) and select "Properties "? If that photo for example, was originally say a jpg does it now still say it's a jpg? Properties has three tabs to gather information from "General ", "Security" "Summary ". Please Post back with results.

Some viruses attack graphic files, hiding in them and replicating when the files are clicked on. Are you sure you're not infected? Check this thread.

    sparrow,
no viruses detected by norton scans in any files, scanned all files before and after moving.
    (scan before w/NAV ver.2, and after w/works 2003 pro ver.6.01)

    irdreed,
Right click->properties; no security tab in any files.
General tab says jpg, gif or tif accordingly, and info listed there is the same as files that work.(except location and size)
    general->advanced; all the same.
    Summary tabs differ;
    working files list width,heigth,resolution,etc.,
non working files have a plain summary page that says:
"summary properties are unavailable for the selected source(s). "

seems like the file headers are missing?

Read on. You'll find that you need to do an online scan to be sure.

OK, I was reasonably certain that my rig is clean, but just to make sure, I dug IE out from under the rug and went to "www3.ca.com/securityadvisor "
did the online virus scan and pest scan, found nothing. I like my rig pretty clean, and I spend a lot more maintenance time than the average user.
Also ran "www.jasons-toolbox.com/browser security ", found a few minor "holes" but nothing I wasn't already aware of. (I like my firefox the way it is)

Then I ran "hijack this" and posted my log over in security:
    http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?p=218859#post218859

I'm pretty sure that my graphics file problem isn't from a virus.

    Welderjeffo,
Read your HJ Log, and from the above quote it seems to me what you are now seeing with some of these photos is corrupted data.
I'm not aware of any programs to recover these.

    I was afraid of that.....
I must have a problem in the one of my drives. That'll teach me for not having a backup!
I'm determined to recover, some are pics of my kids from 10-12 years ago!
I tried notepad, wordpad, and metapad to edit some headers this morn and got various results, but none good.
I wish I could find a better program to edit these things....I can't figure out what I'm trying to read.....just guessing.
If I do have any luck, I'll post about it.

    Thanks to all.....
    JeffO
