I also started getting a constant stream of "Scripts are usually safe. Do you want to allow scripts to run? " dialog boxes (sometimes 2 or 3 times before a page loads), within the past few days.

My IE (6.0) settings already matched what Newt posted to this thread. I disabled SpyBot; no improvement.

    Any other ideas?

Hi JBG and welcome to the forum. I split your post from the original thread so we wouldn't get confused about your issue vs. the other one.

Run an online AV scan (see quicklinks in my signature) to make sure something nasty hadn't snuck in and disabled your onboard AV program. Also get the new Microsoft Antispyware app and see what it finds. Beta software but excellent. Available for download Here.

If neither of those helps, post back with your OS version. It may just be IE needing a repair but that's done very differently depending on what OS.

We may also want to take a look at a Hijackthis scan (download link in quicklink) but don't run one until we ask for it. If you do get HJT, be sure to unzip it to a normal folder (not desktop and not temp). c:\hjt is good to create and use.

    Thank you. Here's the situation:
Running XP (home ed, several users)

I have MS's "AntiSpyware" beta installed -- I installed it the day it was announced, and set it to scan every night. Initially it reported lots of hits. By now it's in a steady state: Always lists one "elevated" threat, "Altnet "; claims to remove it, and it's back next night.

I now get the script message sporadically -- for example, just now on an AIM private dialog box.

I had "Spybot - search & destroy" running; I deactivated it (thinking it might be the source of the annoyance). Made no diff. -- I jJust ran its scan, and got 2 msgs:

    a. Error during check!: Unknown (Datei C:\Documents and Settings\JBG\Desktop\?????? ???? ???.url kann nicht geöffnet werden. The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect) ()
-- (What do you make of that?)

    b. Congratulations!: No immediate threats were found. ()

    I'll look at you q-links.

It was "No Flash "; script handling was set to the "Prompt" option.
