Every time I insert a CD or a DVD into a drive, I get a screen that says "Windows can take action every time you insert a CD or DVD [such as run Windows Media Player, Real One Player, etc.]. What do you want Windows to do? "

What I want Windows to do is GET OFF MY BACK. Anybody know how to prevent this screen from appearing? Using XP (Home).

Newt: Not to knock your hero status, but it turns out that your solution didn't solve my problem after all. It's not the autorun feature I'm looking to disable, it's the nag screen that lists all the video and audio options that I don't want to see every time I insert a CD or a DVD.

That "nag screen" IS the auto run feature.
With no disk in the drive:

    open My Computer,
    rt click the CDROM drive,
select Properties from the context menu.
Then click the Autoplay tab and
use the selection menu to choose the type of disk content.
Next, put a check in the Actions radio button "select an action to perform" and choose "Take no action ".
Repeat this procedure for each media type, e.g. Music files, Pictures, Video, Mixed content etc, setting each type to "take no action ".
This will eliminate ALL "nag screens" when inserting a disk.

If you still get some type of "nag screen" then realize that it's not Windows that nees configuring, but some 3rd party program itself that has installed some type of "prompting" application for removable media. In which case you must configure the program that installled it, e.g. real player, QT, etc etc.

You may wish to retain a couple of the media autoplay settings though, such as autoplay Audio files or DVD movies. When an action is created to autoplay a media type, you will continue to get that "nag screen" UNLESS you have a program asociated with the media type. For instance, if want to use Windows Media Player for all audio cds, then you must configure the Options in WMP itself, and then no more nag screen. If you do not config ONE program to do this, then Real Player, QT, WMP, WinAmp will all "fight" to see who should play the audio cd.

    Tony T:

Nope, the nag screen still opens up.

Let me restate the specific problem:

    1. I insert an original DVD containing a home movie.
    2. I click on my desktop icon invoking the executable file for my DVD copying software.
    3. But, instead of the copying software booting up, here comes the nag screen asking me what do I want to do. I have already configured the nag screen to "Take No Action ", and so it informs me. I exit it, and set my copy program to proceed.
    4. So why do I need the nag screen to interupt me?
    5. The nag screen also rears its ugly face when the time comes for me to insert a blank DVD, ready for copying the data the original DVD has parked on my h/d.

All of this requires me to unnecessary monitor what's going on, and to exit the nag screen twice, when I really don't want to see it at all.

Now, can you or Newt just tell me how to prevent that nag screen from ever reappearing again?

Follow the ateps I posted above, and I should have mentioned that you should be logged on as admin or an account that is a member of the admin group.
