I had a problem installing Service Pack 2. My computer basically froze up for a couple of hours. I had to turn it off at the power strip switch. Then, I got a message I expected, telling me that Service Pack 2 didn't install correctly and that I should uninstall it and reinstall it. It said to uninstall it by going to Control Panel and Add/Remove Programs. Here's the problem. When I click on the Control Panel icon on the Desktop, I get a message saying that there was a problem with Windows Explorer and do I want to send Microsoft an error report? If I click yes, I eventually get told to uninstall/reinstall Service Pack 2! If I click no, the Desktop sort of flashes, then I'm back where I started from. If I try to get Control Panel through the Start button, the same result ensues.
    Help!

Can you get to System Restore?

Yes, thanks for the clue to resolve this. It seems I always forget about System Restore. I restored it to the previous day, and it seems to be working OK now. This all started because I noticed the other day that I didn't have the automatic update windows feature turned on. I turned it on and this morning it prompted me to install Service Pack 2. Now that my computer is OK, I wonder, should I try again with Service Pack 2 or am I pressing my luck by doing so? If I choose not to, will I have to disable the auto update?

You will need to install SP 2 sooner or later - it is likely that it will be required for patching XP at some time in the future through Windows Updates.

If you don't want to download it automatically set Automatic Updates to Notify - or Off.

I prefer to set Automatic Updates to Notify so that I can see exactly what is to be downloaded and, if I am happy with what is offered, I then go to Windows Update and download from there at a time convenient to me.

You may prefer to have XP on CD to install at your leisure see Windows XP Service Pack 2

The only place I can find to download SP 2 to disk for installation later is here. This is a 270 Mb file and is the one I used as it was released first - I had previously been running the Release Candidate versions (RC1, RC2).

Provided that you keep SP 1 fully patched you are OK, but eventually you will need it. MS recently discontinued support for plain XP, requiring SP 1 for continued support. This wil change to SP 2 sometime.

BTW - if you decide to try again - one way or the other - set a manual restore point before you run the upgrade. The majority of folk, 90% + have experienced no problems.

I would recommend a thorough cleanup session as a preparatory measure.

Clearing all temp folders including the Temporary Internet Files folder, the history and cookies (unless You have specific reasons to keep Your cookies) may increase the probability of a successful installation of SP2.

I also recommend a run of the defragmenter.

In my opinion, downloading the file and saving to the harddisk, followed by an off-line installation with AntiVirus and FireWall temporarily turned off, is the safest way.

Thanks for the assistance. I was able to successfully install Service Pack 2 this morning. I think temporarily disabling the firewall, antivirus, and Spybot Tea Timer seemed to make it install much smoother.
