I installed a copy of WinXP Pro on top of my WinME (not the upgrade..the computer store guy told me I should go that route) I am not getting my icon to show up on the desktop, and when I click on the start menu..nothing but winXP info..nothing with the ME files shows up. But when I click on the program files I then find my ME files. When I try to get on the internetI am told I need to reinstall the program  I am ready to pull out all of my hair  .Ok somebody HELP....

I have a thought but need to know how you booted the machine to do the upgade.

If you booted from the HD you MAY HAVE two different Windows folders ( setups. ) That is unless you watched CAREFULLY for the install path during the install.

Something like C:\Windows would be the ME. C:\Windows001 may contain the XP files.

I ran into this ONCE. And learned from it.

If you booted from a POWER OFF state directly to a floppy or the CD this USUALLY will not happed. And XP would go into C:\Windows and overwrite and Include the ME stuff.

    PS.
I will not get to be back here until later tonight.

The guy at the computer store should have told you to do your backups first. I doubt any of your program files will work without being reinstalled, and your data is more than likely gone. If I were you, I'd reinstall XP using the long format option, and start from scratch, because your ME, as you knew it, is gone.

I agree with Johanna although I'll list a different reason.

XP over almost any earlier OS can work well. XP over ME is very often a horror tale that can't really be fixed.

I have no problems recommending an upgrade over any other OS version once it is clean and stable but I will not ever recommend upgrading ME.

Now that I wake up and realize that ME was involved, I agree with you.

Thanks everybody with your suggestions....I can get to 90% of my files via My Computer>>>Local Disk(C)>>>Program Files etc. I was told by a friend of mine that I should try to reload WinXP and maybe it would then pull in the icons. If this doesn't do it I am going to have to reload all of my programs. ( I have a lot of programs to reload  ). DVD, Picture it etc....
I went to MS Windows site to get info to uninstall WinXP and restore previous OS and was told to go to Control Panel>>>Add/Remove.... but when I go to the Control Panel >>>Add/Remove WinXP the Add/Remove WinXP file is not there  . Suggestions everybody... should I try to remove WinXP manually(I do not see Windows ME on my C drive only Windows NT). I do not want to ***** up my computer even worse. I am lost as all get out here. I am getting further and further behind with workk, etc. HELPPPPP

Getting your icons back isn't goint to make the programs work, if they have become corrupted, so you may as well do a clean XP install and reinstall your software.

I have never heard of uninstalling XP through the Add/Remove applet in the Control panel. XP is an Operating System, not a program.

Since you have XP Pro, have a look at Recovery Console
    and
ASR when you have a chance.
