    Hi
I get this when playing a video game sometimes, also when I run scandisk towards the end of the scan.

The driver vtdisp for the display device \Device\Video0 got stuck in an infinite loop.
    'STOP 0x000000EA THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER'

Can anyone help me out here, HP does not have a clue, I guess, for they have been no help so far.
    Thanks
    Geri

    Hi Geri,

    Sounds a little strange.

I would try running scandisk in Safe Mode (press the F8 key when you hear the POST beep). Hopefully, without the full video drivers loaded you should be able to complete the Scandisk.

That driver may on a bad sector/cluster on your harddrive. You would need to repair the cluster/s with Scandisk then reinstall the video drivers. The bad cluster may mean that the surface of the harddrive is starting to break down, although I have one drive that has had several repaired clusters over a few years and still goes well. Also check your HP utilities if there is one that will do a surface scan of the harddrive.

    Hi mattman
The only way I know to run scandisk is by selecting it from properties under my C drive, it then asks if I would like to run scandisk, I click yes then it says that it is scheduled the next time I reboot my computer.
So scandisk then starts before windows. I'm not sure how I would scandisk in safe mode when I need to reboot to start scandisk.

    Does that make sense?

HP wants me to do a non-destructive recovery, but they say some file may be lost.
This is what I get from them every time I have a problem they can't seem to solve. It's jump right to extremes

Well there are files I don't want to loose unless I really need to and I don't believe this is one of those times

Hi Geri, I work in Win98, so your scandisk may be different. I don't work in XP a lot. Check in Help/Support for ways to run it.

Alternatively, you may have to reinstall the video drivers before scandisk will "complete" (if they are basic system files that will not work properly).

Try the "utilities" if you can, they will at least tell you if there is a problem with the harddrive.

    Matt
Edit: If there is data you cannot afford to lose, you must back-up. Your harddrive could fail at any time without warning, bad sectors or not...!! I have back-ups of back-ups (well, sort of, I back-up using two different methods/programs in case one does not work, burning important files to CD is one).

Run chkdsk (no scandsk in XP) .....

    Start > Run > cmd > Enter

In the command window change to the root of the drive you want to check - C:\

chkdsk /r - note the space and accept to schedule chkdsk at the next boot.

chkdsk runs at the 'Dos' level before Windows loads.

    chkdsk

Have you tried reloading the video drivers?

    Update

    Hi
Thanks everyone for the input, It seems after trial and error it was the driver for my digital camera that was causing the problem (I believe).
I contacted the manufacturer (VuPoint) they told me that the driver would not work with Windows XP SP2.
They have no patch, I ask them what they plan on doing seeings how I have a camera that does me no good?
Have not heard from them as of yet (2 days).

    Thanks again
    Geri

Geri, how confident are you that you isolated it to a camera driver?

That error is very specific about the malfunctioning software being vtdisp . This is one of the new XP bugcheck codes, and its not often wrong about these things.
Have you tried updating your graphics drivers from VIA?

    Hi Joe
Well I'm not sure  As you can see I'm a beginner, next to you all here I know nothing
My computer is an OEM (HP Pavilion) under warranty so HP sends me driver updates and I have the latest update they have. Would VIA have something more?
I run chkdsk and did not receive the error after uninstalling the camera driver, so I just figured that was the cause. ??

The only other thing I can do is uninstall the VIA driver and then reinstall it.
HP sent me directions to do this, but I was hoping that I would not have to do that.
Will I loose my display screen? If I ended up in DOS I would be lost!
    Geri

    Edit
My properties display window for the VIA says that "This device is working properly. "
    Can I go by that?

Geri, if anything goes wrong, boot into Safe Mode, go to Control Panel -> Display and change the Display Adapter there to a "standard" video adapter. Then go back to "normal" Windows and redo the HP driver reinstall instructions again.

Experiment booting into Safe Mode before you start, sometimes it can be tricky "catching" the right moment to press the F8 key.

I take it that you have a "standard" HP video adapter, aka, graphics card (the one supplied with the computer). Windows will only have two sets of drivers to choose from, the (corrupt?) ones you have now or standard drivers. You should not have too much trouble.

    From my experience...err...no!

Maybe find out where your nearest HP repairer is, in case of big trouble. If you ring first, he should be able to get it going while you wait.
