    Something got inadvertently changed:

When I boot, I have to make a choice between two sides of the screen, one side had "Windows" and the other side, my name and a notice of how many emails I have waiting.

I dont want to have to make that choice because if am not at my keyboard at the moment. nothing happens until I do. I just want my account loaded. This is a single user computer.

I am running XP home with SP2

To configure XP to boot straight into a user account:
    1. Go to Start>Run
    2. Type "control userpasswords2" (without the quotes, with the space after "control), click OK
    3. Uncheck "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer," click OK
    4. In the window that opens, enter the name and password of the account you want it to logon to. If there is no password, leave the password field blank. Click OK.

    That should do it.

    I replied too soon.

I got that box and did uncheck that box. However, it still comes up and, while I don't have to enter a password (and did not before), I still have to click on it to continue. I want to completely eliminate that.

I hesitate to remove any entiries in the USERS box. It contains:
    Administrator
    Aspnet ?????
    My name.

I dont want to lock myself out altogether

    Remove the ASP .NET user

    Click Start ~ Run
    Type "control userpasswords2" (without quotes)
    Click OK
Select the ASP .NET user and click remove
    Click Yes
    Click OK

    Done! :D

I cannot delete the AspNet. The entire box is locked to me.

Have you ticked the box above?
"Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer "

    No - it is unchecked

I find this problem is a function of having installed .NET which was apparently required by an app in Installed. BUT I dont remember which one and I am also having a problem uninstalling .NET ( if I need to)

    Hello

Are you able to go into user accounts in the control panel... If you can, you will probably see the ASP .NET user in there. If you click on the user and click remove or delete this user, and answer yes to all the questions....

    HTH,
    Liam ;)

Paddy: I was able to get to the 'user accounts', but ASP was not in there.\\

There was account in my name as administrator and another "Guest" account "which was marked "Guest account is off ".

With regard to SurferDude's link to MS.

I did add the entry to the Registry with:

    ==========================
    5. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.

In the right pane, a Name field that contains New Value #1 of a new value is selected for editing.
    6. In the Name field, type ASPNET, and then press ENTER to replace New Value #1 with ASPNET.

A new value that is named ASPNET is created under the subkey that you located in step 4.
    ========================
It entered ASPNET with a value of #00000. Should that be other than zero
