My computer use to start but immediately afterwards it would freeze before I could go to any application. It use to start in safe mode with no problem. I decided to repair the OS.

in windows xp home while trying to repair the os to keep from losing my files everything works until it get to "setup will be complete in approximately 39 minutesâ€. That’s when a dialog box comes up that says "The file asms on windows xp home edition cd-rom is needed. type the path where the file is located and then click okâ€
But my computer wont type if i use a ps/2 keyboard the whole computer freezes when I hit any key. If I use a usb keyboard the computer doesn’t freeze but it doesn’t type either. when I cancel setup and go to the system setup log the message says one of the components that windows needs to continue setup could not be installed. Fatal error

I tried starting from a boot disk and the disk starts the computer but I can't see the hard drive.

The setup program looks like its working because the little dots are lighting up on the lower left corner. Does anyone have any ideas of what I can do other that reformatting my drive?

Hi Bobbi, welcome to the board. Sounds like you have a serious problem, but maybe it can be solved without formatting.

    A couple of questions:

When did this problem start, and what were the first symptoms?

Are you saying the machine will not start at all now, even in safe mode? What happens when you turn on the machine?

When you were attempting to repair, were you starting from inside Windows, that is, inserting the CD while the computer is running, or are you booting from the CD?

When you say you booted from a boot disk, do you mean a floppy disk? If so, you say the machine boots but you can't see your hard drive what do you see?

Try and give us a full description of everything that happened/happens including any error messages or BSoDs you might have seen.

    Will try to help

    Martin

Admin note: Hi Authentic - please start a new topic for your problem. Since your hardware and other specifics are different, we need to not get the two issues confused and wind up not helping either of you properly.

    Hi Martin

Here are the answers to your questions. The problem started when I purchases Registry Repair Pro, installed it and told it to repair the errors it fround in the registry. After restart, the computer froze afterstartup except in safe mode.

No the machine does not start now in safe mode. When I turn it on it goes to the point of installation with 39 minutes left and tells me that it can’t find asms

When I started to repair my system, I booted the machine by using the windows xp cd.

As it is staring it gives the message that windows 98 has detected that drive c does not contain a valid FAT or FAT32 particiton. and gives 3 possible causes drive may need to be partitioned, thire-party disk partitioning software. or perhaps a virus.

The machine will still boot from a windows 98 floopy boot disk. When I check each drive on A : shows The files from the windows 98 boot disk

    C: showMS- Ramdrive files

D: shows WxHoem_en which appear to be the files on the xp cd

e: says cdr101: Not ready reading drive E Abort, Retry Fail?

Thanks for trying to help me.

I personally don't use any registry cleaners anymore. They advertise no errors, faster computer and those boot-up prompts. I used one, changed 1000 "items" in.

My registry corrupted to where I could not start XP in any shape or form.
(See thread "Critical Boot Error! ") So you shouldn't go messing with the registry, only with the registry checker that comes with windows.

If only microsoft didn't make registry editing such a black art -
(they have a legal disclaimer that discourages doing anything to it) then we wouldn't have crippleware that ruins your boot sector everywhere.

So anyways, what can you get into?

    Hi Dave
I can't get into anything. The computer gives the appearance of starting even up to the windows 2000 screen then it goes to the xp setup screen asking for asms.

Bobbi: You aren't trying to repair Windows 2000 using an XP CD?
Other than that, I do not have a clue why the XP install cannot see a file on the install CD.

I'm not sure what I would do in these circumstances, but probably I'd check to see if the CD was clean, no fingerprints, dirt, coffee spills, etc. Then I think I would try booting from the CD again and try the repair install a second time.

    What say other board members?

    Martin,

I made a mistake and wrote windows 2000, probably cause i use it all day. My computer begins with the windows XP screen then goes to the point where it can't find the files.

I guess the only thing I can do is change the drive to a slave and reformat it since it won't even let me get back to a fresh installation.

Listen to this! Since I couldn't see my hard drive when I booted from a floppy disc, I decided to make my hard drive a slave in another computer so that I could reformat it(I'd given up hope of ever seeing my files again.) But when I went to the drive, I can see all of my files and folders.

Should I copy everything to the master drive and reformat or is there a way to undo the setup program that is running but failing?
