On my XP system (a Sony VAIO, pre-installed), I can't drop file icons onto program icons to open the files, even if the files are native to those apps.

I've tried turning one-click to two-click, and I've looked everywhere for a control in XP, but no luck.

Anyone know how to restore this basic function? Am I missing something obvious?

    Thanks -

    Hi Ed,

can you be a little explicit on this one please?

can you give me the following info-

are you running xp home or Pro?

    what is your model number?

what do you mean when you say you can't drop file icons to program icons?

    Regards

    hi ed

here I am again. I just realized what you meant-

create a filein an application - drag and drop on that application. I just tried it with my VAIO XP PRO. I created a wordpad test document- and dropped in word. It works.

re drag and drop - a twisted answer

Thomas, thanks so much for replying. I have XP home, on a VAIO pcg-fxa33

Anyway, I had been dragging various word/text/etc. files onto my desktop Word icon, a shortcut, and getting nada. But after your message, I tried it on my actual Word exe and it worked, same with excel.

To add to the twist, when I made my own shortcuts, they worked fine.

So I will trash the one that came with the Sony. I guess that icon file was corrupt? Strange.

    Thanks again.

I heard of this before - I believe it was on this forum before they were hacked.

The icons as such are not corrupt, but created by the Office install program and somehow contain other information than the usual shortcuts created by you as a user.
