I have installed and reinstalled XP Pro on 2 different computers and I never had to specifically log in. I am the only user of my computer. I download most of the updates but install only those i think apply to me. Microsoft has recently gotten cute and clicking the usual icon to sign off automatically installs all the updates. You have to click away from the red "Turn off computer" icon to avoid the install. Unfortunately, I reflexly clicked the red guy. Now every time I log on, I have to click on my account i.d. and wait around while the machine gets the settings, etc. How can i get back to the old quick and dirty boot up where my desktop appears immediately without my having to identify myself?

To configure XP to boot straight into a user account:
    1. Go to Start>Run
    2. Type "control userpasswords2" (without the quotes, with the space after "control), click OK
    3. Uncheck "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer," click OK
    4. In the window that opens, enter the name and password of the account you want it to logon to. If there is no password, leave the password field blank. Click OK.

    That should do it.

    thanks

    Thanks Miz.
I've been looking for that screen for weeks!
My problem was pretty trivial in the grand scheme of things, but it was like a pebble in one's shoe. Very annoying.
    Thanks again.
