I have a Dell Latitude X 300 running Windows XP. My roommate has a Sony Vaio running Win XP as well.

I need to access his CD burner. How do I do this? It isn't detachable. Can I use a simple network cable?

To connect them directly, network card to network card, you'll need a crossover cable.

I've not tried sharing a CD writer but it will have to be marked as a shared drive if it's possible.

At the very least, once you have the network working, you can transfer the files you want to burn to CD over to the Vaio's harddrive and burn them from there.
