control panel [how to change view]

I'm sure I will be getting a simple answer but i have been trying everything to bring back the option to "change to classic view" in the control panel left hand side options, even a repair install didn't fix this problem, can you please help, thank you, regards

If you do set options "folder view options" to use Windows classic folders via:
Open Folder Options in Control Panel.
Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
Click Appearance and Themes, and then click Folder Options.
On the General tab, under Tasks , click Use Windows classic folders.

Choosing this option hides the default task links in the left pane of Windows folders, such as My Documents. It also makes the Category view in Control Panel unavailable.

In other words you lose the "common tasks pane" on the left and because of that category view becomes unavailable. If you want to view and use "Common Tasks" options and want this shown do not check "use classic view ".

Can you be a little more descriptive on the lack of this option? Do you have the split paned viewed with "Common Tasks" on the left and (depending on choice of "classic" or "category ") the right side icons, list or what ever view you've chosen. If show or use "common tasks" is your preference, The first category will be "Control panel ". If you click on the arrow on the right of this your options will drop down (open) or close accordingly. The only option will be one ie; if your already using "category view" the option will be "switch to classic view ". Clicking on this will switch to classic icons (or view preference). Vis-versa if your already using classic view the only option will be "Switch to category view ".
