Just probing around my "Program Files" folder, and realized that within my Grisoft folder there are 2 subfolders now: AVGfree and AVG6. I've been using AVGfree (i.e., 7) since last fall. Frankly, I thought I'd uninstalled AVG 6 (in fact, it doesn't show up under Add/Remove programs any more; only AVGfree is there now) - why would the AVG6 folder have been left behind? There are 5 files in it:
    $AVGUPD$.BKP
    AVGOERUN.DLL
    AVGW.ERR
    INMCERT.TXT
    OUTMCERT.TXT

Can I safely delete the folder, or should I assume that the folder is still there for a reason?
    Thanks!

I think I would uninstall both and reinstall AVG 7.0. I like to keep my box squeeky clean of old program stuff.

I had to manually delete those same things. Apparently they're normal orphans when uninstalling AVG6. I also noticed and deleted two .dat files related to AVG6 that were in the root folder. They had "hidden" attributes so you'll have to show all files in order to see them. They're easy enough to recognize since they have AVG6 in their names. It's no big deal but like Bmoore, I like to keep it clean if it's not too much trouble.

    Thanks, Bill and Surferdude2!
I have no problem with uninstalling and reinstalling AVG7, but I don't get how that's going to yield me anything different from what I have now, given that I really think AVG6 has technically already been uninstalled (I think that was a prerequisite for installing AVG7).
If the AVG6 folder is still hanging around despite the previous uninstallation of that version, wouldn't it likely still be there even if I did find a way to uninstall AVG6 again?
Surferdude - After your mention of .dat files related to AVG6, I ran a search for "AVG6" on my computer and found just one .dat file (AVG6DB_.DAT), but also a .dll file: avg6cmpt.dll. Sounds like you survived the deletion of the folder and your .dat files okay, so I think I'll follow suit there, but how about the .dll file? The mere mention of .dll files makes me queasy - seems like they're at the root of so many problems I read about!
    Thanks again!

Having had roughly that same thing happen myself with AVG. ( and a couple of other things )

You may need to uninstall all that you can. Then restart Windows and then MANUALLY delete what is left over.

    Then of course reinstall AVG7.

But how do I uninstall AVG6 again if it doesn't show up in my list of things to Add/Remove in my Control Panel?
Or are you suggesting I just uninstall AVG7, reboot, manually delete anything pertaining to AVG regardless of the version (including that .dll file), and then reinstall AVG7?
THAT, I should be able to handle! I'll wait for your reply before taking the plunge - thank you!

    Good question. Answer. You can't

That is the idea. Including the Folders.

Now if something will not delete it means it is still in use which it should not be. But Windows has proven itself to me to be Chocked FULL of surprises.

avg6cmpt.dll is a file in AVG 7.0 and is a component for AVG6 Kernel Compatibility. It is in the C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Free\ and should be there.

I just looked and the file you refer to is in the C:\Prog\files\Grisoft\AVG7 folder.( the only AVG folder I have ) It had to be put there by AVG7 as I preformed all of the steps I suggested to rebecca. And for the same reason I had several different folders.

I also ran RegSeeker after deleting the un-needed folders. That cleaned thing up quite well. Something like 20-25 entries.

I usually run RegSeeker after cleaning out older software and before installing the new.

Done deed, and all is well. :D
BTW, of course you guys were right about the .dll file - I hadn't paid attention to the path when the file showed up in my first search. There were still some ten files/folders related to AVG left after I'd uninstalled AVG7, and I deleted all of them. Rebooted the computer, updated my virus definitions, and I'm up and running again without any problems (amazing!!! ).
    Thanks for all your help!

    You are welcome.

That is good news that we like to hear. Good work

Sometimes it is amazing how much gets leftover after an un-install.

That is one reason I run RegSeeker. To clean out the leftovers.
