I have the same problem on both my XP an Windows 2000 machine: Limited or No Connectivity. I believe this occured after I ran some spyware removal software - this is the only thing common on the two machines - The connectivity problems occurred after a reboot - not immediately (i think!)

I have a home router with DHCP services and i have two other machines in the house that obtain IP addresses and can access the internet. And I have the two machines(XP & W2K) that do not obtain the DHCP address and cannot access the internet but the do have some default addresses (different network than DHCP network).

I reviewed several threads with similiar subjects and have tried several fixes.
-I look at http://users.tpg.com.au/adsl5muj/index.htm and tried the fix for XP
-I've tried restarting ip stack and dhcp,
-i've deleted the ethernet card, rebooted and let the system re-install it.
-I've hardcoded an address that are consistent with the home router network and i can share files with other machines but cannot get internet access.

When I do an IPCONFIG /RENEW i get "An operation was attempted on something that is not a socket "

    Any assistance would be appreciated.

Thank you Maggie for the recommendations - I've tried them all and still no success - I still have the same issue on both machines!

On my Win2K machine - I would get an error when trying to delete the winsock and winsock2 register entries - so i tried deleting the protocols and then adding them back.

With XP I even tried two different exports of winsock and winsock2 registers - nothing seems to work.

    Any other thoughts ?

Have you messed with the Services.msc? Make sure they are all on the default settings. How about the bindings? Are you using TCP/IP to network and internet? What protocols are you using in the bindings?
Try going into safe mode and view all hidden files in device manager. Remove any ghost installs for network cards, or disable them if they won't remove. reboot back.
Just make sure you are using the same protocols for all the machines.

I'd also suggest trying to set the IP manually and see what happens. If you get a connection using static IPs, it will show that the network is fine, and the problem is with DHCP and you PC DHCP client. If static IPs fail you either have a network problem (try a different PC on the same cable), or a more fundimental network problem on the PC (delete and reinstall TCP/IP. Delete and reinstall the network card).

If you are not sure of the static IP to use, use the "Node to Node with gateways" tool at this site to compare likely IP address set ups with those of one of your other working computers (use IPCONFIG /ALL at the command prompt to get the IP information from a working PC). To browse successfully you'll also need to set the DNS statically. Enter the same IP addresses as the working PCs are using (I expect that is the address of the router (your default gateway).

Thank you Maggie and Reggie - I think I tried everything and could not get any of it to work - so here is what I did to overcome my issue:
-On the Win2K machine - I reinstalled win2k completely and installed the ethernet adapter driver then configured IP - DHCP started working again

-On my XP machine - I learned about the 'System Restore' function
-From the control panel - top left I switched to Category View
    -Then selected Performance and Maintenance
-The from top left selected 'System Restore'
-I then selected 'Restore mhy computer to an ealier time'
-then selected a date from the calendar (before I created the problem)
-I restored my system settings to two weeks ago - before I created my self
inflicted problems and Bingo !!! I'm back in business!

So my reason for my posting is 2 fold:
    1) Thank You!!!
    2) Educate the beginner on the 'System Restore' function

Maybe 3 fold - humble myself to change my knowledge setting to beginner or novice from intermediate!
