When I run Ad-Aware SE on a friend's older IBM laptop (Win ME), it finds over 400 critical objects. When I click on "fix," the program runs the quarantine, then I see "Deleting selection," but there is no hard drive activity, and several hours later, the screen has not changed. Windows does not show that the program is not responding. Any suggestions?

You might look through the list to be sure that what it is deleting is safe to delete. It makes some mistakes and editing is always a good idea.

It may have something to do with File Protection, especially if some system files have been marked as hazards or infected. You could try running it in Safe Mode.

Thanks for your quick responses. When the system boots, I cancel the login screen, so no, I probably don't have administrator rights. I will try running in safe mode. Most of the hits are CoolWebSearch, so its probably safe to delete them. I'll post back with results.

Running Ad-Aware in Safe Mode allowed me to delete all the bad stuff. I was unable to find anywhere in Win ME an administrator account as in XP. Doesn't matter. I achieved my objective.

There won't be any accounts comparable to those on an NT system, so forget about it.

Glad you got things cleaned up. I imagine that this problem was just a fluke due to an unusual bug that needed squashing and that for the most part you will be able to run the program in normal mode successfully.
