    Hi guys & gals!

I will tell you what I am working with, and what I have done thus far.

    I have 2 computers.
The one I am on now which is fine (a new dell w/ celeron, running XP).
The other is upstairs and is a compaq 800mhz running XP with about 300 ram.
It will not connect to the internet or AOL.

I have a Linksys wireless router.
I have a Linksys wireless network adapter connected to the my Dell. No problem. Worked pretty much instantly. :)

On my other computer, I ran the wizard to add the network adapter and connected it.

    It tells me:
    Wireless network connection (linksys),
    speed: 11.0 Mbps,
    Signal strength: very good,
    status: connected.
    :)
I can do the ip ping and it replies 4 times. No problem. :)

I have reset my broadband connection (a few times).
I have done the ipconfig release.
I have taken down the firewall from windows XP and my other firewall software.

I have gone to the Linksys site and followed a dozen of their instructions, none of which have worked.
I have lowered the numbers (forgot what they called them) on the router set-up itself.

I have restarted my computer so many times. :(
I have uninstalled and reinstalled the software throught the XP wizard at least 3 times. :(

It will not let me connect to AOL or the internet through explorer.

I called the Linksys people and all I get is a girl in India who barely understands spoken English! She said she could not help me.

I know there is probably something simple I have not done yet that will fix this. :D

Any info would be greatly appreciated!! :)

I have had WEP turned on.
It was originally disabled. I enabled it. It still didn't work, so I disabled it back like it was before.

Yes, I can get to 192.168.1.1.
I can ping that same IP and get 4 replies.

I went to the Linksys site when I got IE to go to my IP #.
I followed the instructions they gave me about changing this and that off the Linksys support website. None of that seemed to work either.

    Thanks for your reply!

Slow down here you have me confused now. ;)

When you open Internet Explorer and type in the addess bar 192.168.1.1 do you get prompted for a user name and password?
Can you enter admin admin and get in?

If so there is no problem with communication from the PC to the Linksys.

If you can get to the configuration screen then post back and we will go to plan B

    Hi,

Yes, I can get to the configuration screen.
I did a few things there as instructed from the Linksys site.
    It didn't help. :(

    Hit me with your recommendations!

Ok let me see if I have the facts straight here.

You have 2 PCs connected to the Linksys Wireless Router.
Both PCs are connected via wireless correct?
The Dell downstairs and the Compaq upstairs.
The Dell connects fine and surfs fine.
What Model Linksys and what model cards?

I know you said you could get to the config screen but was this on the problem pc or the Dell?

I want to know if you can get to the config screen on both PCs or just the Dell.
Who is you internet service provider?

    Do this for me.

Click on Start > Run > Type cmd

At the cmd screen type c:\ipconfig /all >ipconfig.txt

Then brouse to the C drive and look for a text document called ipconfig.txt

Open it, copy the text and paste it here.

    Should look something like this:

    hi,
The thing with linksys is that their routers are automatically set up with no Manuel config . where is the router and where are the pc's ? . i.e 2nd floor and 1st floor ? as my experience as a network adm you can run into a dozen problems with linksys one being almost any florescent lighting wiring can cause a lot of interference and your network will not work do u have thick cement walls ?

Yes, the computer that is working and that is where the DSL actually enters the house is in the basement where my office is.
There is a concrete block wall surrounding the basement and the other room is upstairs beyond a fairly thick (what used to be exterior) wall.

I have thought about moving the computer which is not working to be just above me in another room to see if that would fix it.

I just didn't know enough about configs and all to know if it was something I was doing wrong.

    Thanks for the reply!

Ok, here is weird suggestion. Are you sure that there is only one signal that your Compaq picks up? Try to rename your SSID and make sure that it is your signal that the Compaq cannot use.

Put the Compaq physically next to the transmitting router so that at least interference is not the cause to see if you can get a connection. In fact, while it's there, use the wired connection to see if it works first to make sure that the TCP/IP on the Compaq is ok.

The Network name of the upstairs computer is computer.
What is the name of the downstairs computer? If they are both named "computer" then that will be the cause of the problem because you must have different names for each computer on the Linksys local area network.

The other possible cause is that you are using a static ip address for this computer that is NOT allowed by the Linksys router. Static ip addresses in Linksys routers MUST be numbers between 192.168.1.2 and 192.168.1.99 by default. DHCP addressing in Linksys routers begins at 192.168.1.100 and above by default.
    Code:
    Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
    Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Linksys Wireless-B USB Network Adapter v2.8
    Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-0F-66-0F-9B-76
    Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No
    IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.102
    Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
    DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
If want to use DHCP addressing:
    1. Rt click My Network Places on Desktop.
    2. Rt click Wireless network Conection icon.
    3. In Wireless Net Connection Properties window double click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
    4. Put a checkmark next to the following: "Obtain an ip address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically ".
    5. Click "OK" buttons to get out of each window.

The connection icon in the system tray should let you know if these changes took effect, else reboot the computer and you should now have connectivity.
