Multiple IP Connection

    Hello there!!!

    I have 3 network adapters installed on my pc, they are connected to a small 8port hub and the hub is connected to my isp. I have 3 internet accounts on this ISP and now I want to pipe them to my pc thru these 3 adapters. But I don't know how :cool: :( My goal is to make Windows XP to use all 3 connections at one time, treating them as one, tripple-speeded broadband connection. Can this be done ?

    My ISP Info: One Gateway (NAT maybe)
    DNS Servers
    DHCP Server (assign IP over MAC of client's adapter)

    I have Linux on my computer too, so info about making it work like this is also accepted...

    Sorry van, it doesnt work that way. Its like saying if you can drive 3 cars at once you will get there 3 times faster. I have been a tech for 7 years since college and i have never seen more than 2 NICs in 1 PC and even that is rare. 3 is silly. A wonder your PC doesnt fall over with IRQ conflicts and the like.

    You need to rethink you approach completely and research using routers properly and you will find you only need 1 nic in each PC.

    Actually it is possible to combine multiple WAN connections to get faster speed. However, 2 things must have happened. First, your isp must support this. Secondly, your router must support this. Both can be found out there. I have heard of some ISP who does support this. I just do not know which one. Linksys I believe make a router that combines two "independent" WAN streams. It's one of those high end models.

    On the LAN side, this is known as trunking. It's supported by some high end switches out there.

    While all this is possible, I too have never seen it done.

    There are many reasons why this won't work.
    1. Yes you can have multiple network connections from one PC into the network. It is done on servers to increase bandwidth and/or fault tolerance. It is call adapter teaming. You can get some nasty broadcast loops though, so the NICs need to know they are in a team - so you need compatible network cards. However, were you to get that set up for network, all you've managed to do is create a triple pipe into the hub. There will only be one connection to the internet router. So 300Mb/s max in from the PC, only 100Mb/s possible out of the hub to the router.
    2. A hub is merely a repeater. A signal coming in on one port is repeated on all other ports. Therefore, a hub will only support one connection at a time. So if you were trying to pass data down all three connections at the same time, two would be waiting for the other one to finish. That is 1 would send data while 2 & 3 queued, then 2 would send while 1 & 3 queued, then 3 would send while 1 & 2 queued. So you will need to replace the hub with a switch. However, that doesn't address the other problems.
    3. After all that you haven't address the main problem. The limit on the amount/speed of data from your computer to the internet is the link from your router to the ISP. At best this is likely to be less that 2Mb/s. Even if you were able to pass 300Mb/s over your network it would still have to be queued at the router. In fact you've made the problem worse as you are giving more data to the router to queue thereby increasing the chance that packets will be dropped.
    Therefore, by implementing the system you are describing, all you've done is over complicate your network, and even if you got it to work, it is very likely that it would be slower than a single connection to the internet.

    You are right about the switch but in general, you didn't understand me.

    1. I am some sort of home user, with only one PC. This PC is what I am talking about. In it, I have, let's say 2 network cards of the type "10/100 MBit NIC Realtek 8139 ". I have 2 accounts on the ISP, every account gives me bandwidth of about 3 KBytes/sec. Now I want to combine these two bandwidths into one, that would have 2x3KB/s=6KB/s speed. You must understand also that I CAN'T and I WOULDN'T speak with my ISP to give me more speed in one of the two connections, rather than use 2 slow speed connections.

    2. The PC will not be a router. I just want more speed on my home pc. And I was thinking this will work. My ISP is very incorrect with its customers, but its the only one in my town (Bansko/Bulgaria/East Europe). And I can't live without internet. But this speed is killing me. The pricing is very high for our standarts. So I'm looking for something 'nasty'. I want to pay the same taxes, but use speeded-up connection. This requires stealing of ip & mac adresses of other users. But I will use their IP's only when thir PC's are turned off, so the only victim will be the ISP itself.

    3. I tried some progz, like NIC Express, InterGate and MidPoint, but none of these worked OK. I'm thinking of writing my own progz under unix. That's why I'm gonna need some help, information about protocols, devices, OS and so on...

    Please help me! All I want is knowledge, nothing more...

    Nice example with the 3 cars...
    Now you rethink of it...
    If you have to spend 500 gallons of fuel with one car it will take you some time...But with the 3 cars you will get the job done 3 times faster (of course if there are some racers to drive those cars). Now imagine that the 500 gallons were a 500 MB file over the internet...With one NIC it will take you some time... With 3 Independent NICS it will be 3 times faster, or I'm wrong ??? All I'm looking for is exactly these "racers" - a single program, thath pipes down the three bandwidths or uses them all at one time...

    And one more thing...

    All of that stuff works...I mean..three NICS with 3 different IP's that 5uck net of the ISP...with a HUB...but the only way I've done this was using a single connection for a program that requires net. For example i had my IE running on one network card, and some download manager working with the other... All this works...But I want to combine them bandwidths!!!
    You got the point ???

    Yeh i get the point vanvan, just not sure i want to. It all sounds like a weird way to get extra speed from your internet. Never heard of anyone doing such a thing before. Yes i have heard of multiple NICs in a PC on a LAN, but to an ISP never. You wont notice any improvement in speed. You would need 3 ISP accounts to start with, and 3 phone lines. And how do you tell a program to use one path when you have 3?

    When i said above sorry it doesnt work that way, i should have said sorry it SHOULDNT work that way, because i suppose it is possible to do it. Just dont know why you would want to.

    Sounds to me, financially and practically, it would have made much more sense to just up your bandwidth at your ISP and have 1 NIC. Heard of SDSL?Some people get some funny ideas. Good luck!

    What's the problem I've got the 3 Accounts. Also I've got a switch to "divide" 1 phone line to 3 phone lines. Then I put these 3 Phone lines in my 3 NIC's with different IP's, given from the DHCP of the ISP. Now here is the challenge. I must write some sort of software, which emulates concentrator. It's not simple. But it must work. If the router can divide (share) its connection to all the NIC's in the local net, then there must be some way or some device, if you like, to do exactly the opposite. So...the point is to create a virtual device that uses the 3 NIC IP's as 3 different ISP's Routers. I am seeking an answer of this problem. And I will do my best for accomplishing the goal. Thanks for the help all! Still want help :]
