so is there a way to preserve all my settings, programmes, application data, etc?

It's taken me weeks to rebuild this PC after Win 200 crashed and I've carefully set restore points as I've installed each new piece of software. However, I know nothing is foolproof and so wondered if there was a way to burn something to disk so if I ever have to rebuild my PC again everything is there?

Does Nero 6 do this? If not, is there another piece of software I'd need?

Sorry if this is an FAQ, but not knowing what I need, I don't know what to search for.

Also look at Acronis TruImage... information can be found HERE . All the mentioned products (Ghost, DriveImage and TruImage) make an *image* (an EXACT copy) of your hard drive that can be *restored* in the event of a problem. You have the option to restore one (or more) file(s) or the whole partition. Take a little time to learn how to use this software properly, but it is well worth the effort.

Thanks Mr B and Steve. I'll look at those options.

Arie, I figured even if my heading wasn't meaningful, a short hover would expand the topic by showing the first line. Thanks for adding further clarification for those who don't have tooltips turned on in their browsers.

I use Ghost, and when I got hit by a virus last summer (couldn't boot even to safe mode) the image made just 2 weeks before put me right back in business in 20 minutes; compare that with time spent reinstalling windows and the rest of the software and tweaking it to run like you like! No need to clone the disk, just image the partition. I make a new image every time I make a significant change to the OS.

Search engines don't show tooltips ;)

Usually they only display the title.

    Example: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=Please+help+remove+DMVLite+
